Back In "The Day"

There was no such thing as a "dime" bag or that was terminology I never heard until much later in life. Or not in this area anyway. We bought a bag by how many fingers it was or how many oz's.

If this were a Hunter Biden Mystery Story it would be "The Case Of The White House 8 Ball."

Old School Girls And Cars

You just can’t beat the girls and the cars of the ’70’s.
I’ve seen this picture of Tammy Morgan posing on her ’75 Camaro on quite a few FB and other media sites, everybody claiming it’s something different. In 2024 Tammy recreated the pose with the same Camaro that she has lovingly kept in top condition.
The nice thing is, it doesn’t look like there has been any major body work done. No filler. No new panels. Just a good looking, all original classic.

(Awesome headlights.)

And the car looks pretty decent too.

I would have bought my gas at the BP if I had lived in Georgetown. And I'm pretty sure Sonya would make you a deal on some full service ... it is Alabama after all.

I'm pretty sure that's an Alabama '72 plate.

I love this photo of Redd Foxx and Carroll O’Conner ‘back in the day’ (1973) before Obama when racism was almost dead and a sense of humor was more important than the amount of melanin you had.

Are you old enough to remember candy cigarettes? ... Do you remember how certain groups were sooo outraged that kids were being indoctrinated to think of 'smoking' as a 'cool' or at least an acceptable habit?

Okay, everybody has seen the top picture below and lusted after the FINE looking girl on the left and drifted back to the days when we were 16 or 17 and those girls believed in sex, drugs, rock and roll and sex and .... well anyway, after checking out the girl in the picture for a while ... GET THIS, THERE'S A CAR IN THAT PICTURE. I started looking around and found a better picture and after searching for a while I found out that this was not just some random car. The car, which is a 1971 Pontiac Trans Am was featured in Car Craft magazine and was used in several short CA street cruisin' documentaries. Oh yeah, the owner of the car is Sally Annette who is the blonde. The absolute doll on the left is her friend Debbie Rose. In 1971 they lived in Fullerton, CA. (So they're both in their late 60's by now by my estimation.)

Another great commercial from the past. This commercial would be banned today because we aren't supposed to assume that a woman (old school Barbie) would be attracted to a real MAGA man (GI Joe) instead of the metrosexual Ken. You won't see commercials like this on TV anymore. It's just too damn sexist.

Nissan 300ZX Commercial With Barbie And Ken And Featuring Van Halen’s ‘You Really Got Me.’ 1996 - (The man at the end is a look alike of the man who brought Nissan (then Datsun including the original 240Z) to America, Yutaka Katayama.)

Fruit Stripe Gum, I bid you farewell.

The brand, which has existed since the 1960s under various ownership, is finally disappearing. The multicolored gum, along with its zebra mascot Yipes, is being withdrawn, according to manufacturer Ferrera Candy, as reported by CBS MoneyWatch. The decision to discontinue this product was carefully researched, with several variables being evaluated, such as customer preferences, buying habits, and overall brand trends, according to the company’s statement that was sent to CNN.
Wet ‘n’ Wild gum came in five flavors: peach, lemon, cherry, orange, and melon. The sticks were striped with zebra patterns.  An era has come to a close, according to John Finn of the @snack recollections account on X, who spoke with the Takeout. “Somehow, that dull, fluorescent, sweet gum manages to encapsulate childhood for countless generations in a manner that defies explanation.”
Food & Wine’s Jelisa Castrodale writes, “If you call yourself an older millennial, then you definitely grew up with Fruit Stripe gum, its wildly erratic zebra mascot, and the brightly colored sticks of gum with bold fruit flavors that lasted almost as long as it took you to read this sentence.”

I know most people I talk to hated the thin pizza that we used to get in school. I'm not a pizza lover but if I do get pizza I usually get the deep dish meat lovers style pizza with every topping I can get because it's the toppings I'm after. I'm not a big 'crust' lover. My wife loves almost any kind of pizza. About 9 or 10 years ago I came across this recipe of the old school pizza and I talked my wife into helping me put it together. I really looked forward to them in school and now we do this recipe about once a year. It's a nostalgia thing and I really enjoy it on a infrequent basis. Anyway, this is the authentic old school recipe, I copied it directly from the recipe cards that were used to make the pizza.

Old School / Cafeteria / Lunchroom Pizza Recipe

Ingredients:

Crust:

2 2/3 cups flour
3/4 cup powdered milk
2 tbsp sugar
1 packet of quick rise yeast
1 tsp salt
1 2/3 cup warm water (105-110 degrees)
2 tbsp vegetable oil

Filling:

1/2 pound ground chuck
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 8 oz. block mozzarella cheese – grated yourself  (To be authentic school pizza, you will have to use imitation mozzarella shreds.)

Sauce (I make sauce the day before):

6 oz can tomato paste
1 cup water
1/3 cup olive oil
2 cloves garlic minced
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1/2 tbsp dried oregano
1/2 tbsp dried basil
1/2 tsp dried rosemary crushed

Half sheet pan and line with parchment paper.

Instructions:

Crust:

Preheat oven to 475 degrees.  Spray pan with Pam and lay Parchment paper down (Pam makes it stick)
In a large bowl, mix flour, powdered milk, sugar, yeast, salt, whisk to blend
Add oil to hot water (110-115 degrees) pour into your mixture
Stir with a wooden spoon until batter forms, don’t worry about lumps, you just want no dry spots
Spread dough into pan using fingertips until it’s even. If dough doesn’t want to cooperate, let rest 5 minutes and try again
Bake just the crust for 8-10 minutes, remove from oven and set aside.
Brown meats until it resembles crumbles, set aside and drain meat, also
Get out the pizza sauce, to partially baked crust, assemble:
Sauce, spread all over crust
Sprinkle meats
Sprinkle cheese
Bake at 475 degrees for 8-10 minutes until cheese melts and begins to brown
Remove from oven, let stand 5 minutes
Cut in slices and serve

White Pine Cough Syrup With Tar - Morphine Sulfate, Chloroform And Alcohol. This is why you didn't stay sick in the good old days ... you either got better, you got so high you didn't know you were sick, or the medicine killed you.

If you've ever had to spend a summer doing this, you knew what work was about and you grew up in a different world, a world kids today have NO understanding of. (Not to mention the excitement of finding the occasional snake in a bale.) I grew up working in chicken houses, milking cows, cropping tobacco, baling and stacking hay, throwing watermelons, growing corn, and going to school in between. I appreciated the way I was raised because it prepared me for life. It was a rough life but we laughed and partied and enjoyed life more than any of these kids today. We didn't get put on drugs to cure depression, we were too active to have time to be depressed. And between all that there were girls, cars, motorcycles, family reunions, swimming at the springs, and all the things that make life worth living. It was a good time.

Billy Tea - Australia's favorite strong bush cuppa, in bags or leaf. The term Billy Tea refers to tea brewed in a billy can, that is a small can, tin or pot used on a campfire for boiling water/tea etc. So the term "billy up to the fire" basically means, "put the kettle on".
