House GOP Picks Mike Johnson As Fourth Nominee For Speaker.
(Johnson will be the next speaker … unless the GOP really, really wants to lose worse than what I think.)

House Republicans selected Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Tuesday night to be their fourth nominee for speaker in the three weeks since Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was voted out of the role.

The next House floor vote could happen as early as Wednesday, as Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC) gaveled the chamber out until noon. Because Republicans have a narrow majority in the House, Johnson can only afford to lose a handful of GOP votes to win the speakership if all Democrats oppose his bid. So far, Democrats have rallied behind their nominee, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
After a new candidate forum, the House GOP held a fresh round of votes for the nomination. The declared candidates included Reps. Johnson, Byron Donalds (R-FL), Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN), and Mark Green (R-TN). A fifth contender, Rep. Roger Williams (R-TX), announced a late entry after the candidate forum. Yet another competitor, Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK), dropped out and endorsed Johnson before voting got underway.
Johnson prevailed in the third round over Donalds, the only remaining declared candidate by that point, with 128 votes. Attendance was lower than it was for the votes earlier in the day. More than 40 members voted for McCarthy in the final ballot while Donalds got 29 votes.
When Johnson first announced his candidacy over the weekend, he said a speaker should strive to “restore trust,” “advance a comprehensive policy agenda,” “promote individual members,” “engage members,” “effectively message,” “build and utilize external coalitions,” and “develop and grow our majority.” He also emphasized, “We all agree the urgency of this hour demands a specific plan and bold, decisive action.”

Nevada GOP Gov Signs Bill Mandating Insurance Companies Cover Trans Procedures On Minors.
Nevada Republican Governor Joe Lombardo signed a bill into law this week that forces insurance companies to pay for an individual’s transgender procedures, including surgery on minors.
Lombardo’s move comes as Republican governors in nearly 20 states have signed laws to ban transgender procedures on those under 18. In Kentucky, Republicans overrode Democratic Governor Andy Beshear’s veto of a similar ban.
“Except as otherwise provided in this section, an insurer that issues a policy of health insurance shall include in the policy coverage for the medically necessary treatment of conditions relating to gender dysphoria and gender incongruence. Such coverage must include coverage of medically necessary psychosocial and surgical intervention and any other medically necessary treatment for such disorders,” SB 163 says.
Lombardo, who was criticized by conservatives last month after signing a bill to make Nevada a sanctuary for abortion tourism, said he wanted people to read the law before voicing opposition.
“I implore people to read the bill in its entirety,” he told reporters. “And you will see it’s not as draconian or detrimental or immoral as people are portraying it to be.”
The Daily Wire reached out to Lombardo for further comment on his decision to sign the bill.
The bill was opposed by every Republican in the state Senate and Assembly.

Nevada RNC Committeewoman Sigal Chattah blasted Lombardo’s decision, tweeting that Lombardo was “becoming a laughingstock across the nation.”
Chattah also suggested that Lombardo had signed the bill to get Democrat support for the Oakland Athletics professional baseball team relocating to Las Vegas.
Some in the state have expressed concern over the law’s implication for Christian or other religious insurance providers who could have a moral objection to the law.
“This law can fund surgical interventions for a child of any age who suffers from gender dysphoria,” Pacific Justice Institute lawyer Emily Mimnaugh told the Nevada Globe. “This law provides no protection for a religious organization, affiliated with an insurer, who objects to these surgeries and its mandate. This law is pushing childhood surgeries forward and pushing people of faith to the side. The new mandate is inconsistent with current state law and contrary to our constitutional guarantee of religious liberty.”
The law is set to take effect on July 1.
