 On This Date In History

On January 9, 1945, Gen. Douglas MacArthur and the American 6th Army land on the Lingayen Gulf of Luzon, another step in the capture of the Philippine Islands from the Japanese.
The Japanese controlled the Philippines from May 1942, when the defeat of American forces led to General MacArthur’s departure and Gen. Jonathan Wainwright’s capture. But in October 1944, more than 100,000 American soldiers landed on Leyte Island to launch one of one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific war, and herald the beginning of the end for Japan.
Newsreels captured the event as MacArthur waded ashore at Leyte on October 20, returning to the Philippines as he had famously promised he would after the original defeat of American forces there. What the newsreels didn’t capture were the 67 days it took to subdue the island, with the loss of more than 55,000 Japanese soldiers during the two months of battle and approximately 25,000 more soldiers killed in smaller-scale engagements necessary to fully clear the area of enemy troops. The U.S. forces lost about 3,500.
The sea battle of Leyte Gulf was the same story. The loss of ships and sailors was horrendous for both sides. That battle also saw the introduction of the Japanese kamikaze suicide bombers. More than 5,000 kamikaze pilots died in this gulf battle, taking down 34 ships. But the Japanese were not able to prevent the loss of their biggest and best warships, which meant the virtual end of the Japanese Imperial Fleet.
These American victories on land and sea at Leyte opened the door for the landing of more than 60,000 American troops on Luzon on January 9. Once again, cameras recorded MacArthur walking ashore, this time to greet cheering Filipinos. Although the American troops met little opposition when they landed, they lost the light cruiser Columbia and the battleship Mississippi, to kamikazes, resulting in the deaths of 49 American crewmen.
The initial ease of the American fighters’ first week on land was explained when they discovered the intricate defensive network of caves and tunnels that the Japanese created on Luzon. The intention of the caves and tunnels was to draw the Americans inland, while allowing the Japanese to avoid the initial devastating bombardment of an invasion force. Once Americans reached them, the Japanese fought vigorously, convinced they were directing American strength away from the Japanese homeland. Despite their best efforts, the Japanese lost the battle for Luzon and eventually, the battle for control over all of the Philippines.

On January 9, 1776, writer Thomas Paine publishes his pamphlet “Common Sense,” setting forth his arguments in favor of American independence. Although little used today, pamphlets were an important medium for the spread of ideas in the 16th through 19th centuries.
Originally published anonymously, “Common Sense” advocated independence for the American colonies from Britain and is considered one of the most influential pamphlets in American history. Credited with uniting average citizens and political leaders behind the idea of independence, “Common Sense” played a remarkable role in transforming a colonial squabble into the American Revolution.
At the time Paine wrote “Common Sense,” most colonists considered themselves to be aggrieved Britons. Paine fundamentally changed the tenor of colonists’ argument with the crown when he wrote the following: “Europe, and not England, is the parent country of America. This new world hath been the asylum for the persecuted lovers of civil and religious liberty from every part of Europe. Hither they have fled, not from the tender embraces of the mother, but from the cruelty of the monster; and it is so far true of England, that the same tyranny which drove the first emigrants from home, pursues their descendants still.”
Paine was born in England in 1737 and worked as a corset maker in his teens and, later, as a sailor and schoolteacher before becoming a prominent pamphleteer. In 1774, Paine arrived in Philadelphia and soon came to support American independence. Two years later, his 47-page pamphlet sold some 500,000 copies, powerfully influencing American opinion. Paine went on to serve in the U.S. Army and to work for the Committee of Foreign Affairs before returning to Europe in 1787. Back in England, he continued writing pamphlets in support of revolution. He released “The Rights of Man,” supporting the French Revolution in 1791-92, in answer to Edmund Burke’s famous “Reflections on the Revolution in France” (1790). His sentiments were highly unpopular with the still-monarchal British government, so he fled to France, where he was later arrested for his political opinions. He returned to the United States in 1802 and died in New York in 1809.

Back to Philly – Joe Biden Scheduled to Deliver Another “Threat to Democracy” Speech in Philadelphia

When it comes to the people around Joe Biden and elections, Philadelphia is oddly the only venue they use with frequency.
As NBC announces that Joe Biden will deliver another “threat to democracy” campaign speech, the venue is once again Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  This is the fifth time Philly has been used as the backdrop for advancing the narrative of MAGA extremism as a threat to the authoritarian control state of the Biden administration.
(VIA NBC) – President Joe Biden will cast former President Donald Trump as a threat to democracy Saturday in a speech set to be delivered on the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection, the Biden campaign said this week.
The speech is expected to be a key component of the campaign’s efforts to highlight the stakes of the presidential election, one that’s shaping up to be a rematch of the 2020 contest.
On a call with reporters announcing Saturday’s event, campaign officials used dire terms in warning against a potential Trump victory.
Communications director Michael Tyler said that if Trump wins in November, he “will use all of his power to systematically dismantle and destroy our democracy.”
Campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez added, “Our message is clear, and it is simple: We are running a campaign like the fate of our democracy depends on it. Because it does.”
Biden will deliver his remarks in the Philadelphia area near Valley Forge, a historic Revolutionary War site where George Washington worked to rally troops into a unified army in the late 1770s.
“There, the president will make the case directly that democracy and freedom — two powerful ideas that united the 13 colonies and that generations throughout our nation’s history have fought and died for a stone’s throw from where he’ll be Saturday — remains central to the fight we’re in today,” said Quentin Fulks, a deputy campaign manager.
Biden campaign officials also argued that Trump has grown more dangerous since the previous election.
"The threat Donald Trump posed in 2020 to American democracy has only grown more dire in the years since," Chavez Rodriguez said.
Trump himself plans to hold two campaign events Saturday, setting the stage for a split-screen moment.
Next week, Biden will deliver campaign remarks at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, where nine people were killed in a mass shooting by an admitted white supremacist in 2015.
"Whether it is white supremacists descending on the historic American city of Charlottesville, the assault on our nation's capital on January 6 or a white supremacist murdering churchgoers at Mother Emanuel nearly nine years ago, America is worried about the rise in political violence and determined to stand against it," Fulks said.
Biden and Trump were neck and neck in a hypothetical matchup in the most recent NBC News poll. In the November survey, 44% of respondents picked Biden, while 46% picked Trump — a difference that's within the poll's margin of error. At the same time, Biden's approval rating dipped to 40%, the lowest of his presidency.

Khalilh Evans, 44, was arrested less than 24 hours after being accused of approaching the teen girl at Willow Grove Mall in Abington Wednesday night and forcibly trying to lead her across the mall, WTXF-TV reported.
Investigators say Evans contacted his attorney in Media and arranged to turn himself in on Thursday, the station said, adding that police believe Evans attempted similar crimes with other young women.
"This is the type of crime where the hair on your back stands up," Abington Police Chief Patrick Molloy said, according to WTXF. "Only God knows what their intentions were; we can only assume the worst."
Molloy held up Evans' 28-page rap sheet, which includes charges for weapons, assault, and threats, during a Thursday afternoon press conference, the station noted.
Evans has been charged with false imprisonment of a minor and two counts of harassment, WTXF reported, adding that his bail was set at $25,000.
Chief Molloy called Evans "an individual who should not have been on the street," the station said, adding in its video broadcast that he was on probation in Philadelphia.
Molloy called "some of the failed policies in Philadelphia with the district attorney's office where it's somewhat of a revolving door where dangerous felons are let back on the street to prey upon our children," WTXF said.
The station it reached out to the Philadelphia DA's office for comment but didn't hear back.

The rifle-wielding not-so-usual suspect who donned a bulletproof vest before shooting dead five men and injuring two children in Philadelphia has been identified as a Black Lives Matter supporter who shared gun-toting memes on social media.
Kimbrady Carriker, 40, was nabbed shortly after the bloodshed in the city’s Kingsessing neighborhood Monday night, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, citing sources.
On his Facebook page, Carriker posted two pictures of him wearing a bra, a women’s top and earrings with his hair braided long in March. He also regularly posts about supporting Black Lives Matter, including supporting workers who protested in the Strike For Black Lives in July 2020.

(My Opinion: The premeditated mass shooting last night in Philadelphia, where the shooter was wearing a bullet proof vest and shot a bunch of people, killing five and wounding others, was committed by a black man. So that explains why there wasn't wall to wall coverage and the story has vanished from cable news.
Last night when the media didn't identify the perpetrator as a "White man in his 40s" and instead just "a man in his 40s" it was clear the shooter was black.
And in this case it looks like it's not just a black man, but a black man who identifies as a woman. ANOTHER transgender mass murderer who preplanned their murder spree, using a bullet proof vest. Police say they have "absolutely no idea" why he did it, which means it was likely another case of heterophobic rage.
Ordinarily such an atrocity would be covered for a week straight, but this one will disappear by tonight and never be mentioned again by the gun grabbers. They only organize protests and call for more gun bans when the shooters happen to be White.
They don't want to fuel any "stereotypes" (facts) that black men commit about 10 times as much violent crime as White people and that black people are 13% of the population but commit 60% of all violent crime. (It's not 50% anymore, it's up to 60% now)

Section of northbound I-95 collapses in Philadelphia after tanker truck catches fire underneath highway.

A section of northbound I-95 in Philadelphia has collapsed after a tanker truck caught fire underneath the highway, Philadelphia officials said Sunday morning.
“We did have a collapse of 95 on the northbound side, and the southbound side is compromised by heavy fire,” Derek Bowmer, battalion chief for the Philadelphia Fire Department, said during a news conference Sunday morning. “It looked like we had a lot of heat and heavy fire underneath the underpass.”
Firefighters are still battling the blaze, Bowmer said.
Explosions around the highway collapse were caused by “runoff of maybe some fuel or gas lines that could have been compromised by the accident,” said Bowmer.
“We have fire coming out of those manholes,” Bowmer said.
Photos and videos from the scene show huge plumes of smoke billowing from the interstate.
The mayor’s office told CNN a large tanker truck fire caused the collapse. The highway is closed in both directions around the area and the fire is under control, according to Sarah Peterson, the office’s communications director.
Dominick Mireles, director of Philadelphia’s Office of Emergency Management, said officials would be dealing with the collapse and the fire for a long time.
“Today’s going to be a long day. And obviously with 95 northbound gone, and southbound questionable, it’s going to be even longer than that,” Mireles said. “The roadway’s gone.”
Tumar Alexander, managing director for the City of Philadelphia, said the incident will “be a significant impact to this community for a while.”
“95 will be impacted for a long time,” Alexander said during the news conference.
The fire is under investigation by the fire marshal and other partners, Bowmer added during the news conference.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the US Department of Transportation is offering assistance to Pennsylvania after the collapse.
“Closely monitoring the fire and collapse on I-95 in Pennsylvania,” Buttigieg wrote on Twitter. “I’ve been in touch with FHWA and spoke with Gov. Shapiro to offer any assistance that USDOT can provide to help with recovery and reconstruction.”
