On June 6, 1944, Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower gives the go-ahead for the largest amphibious military operation in history: Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of northern France, commonly known as D-Day.
By daybreak, 18,000 British and American parachutists were already on the ground. An additional 13,000 aircraft were mobilized to provide air cover and support for the invasion. At 6:30 a.m., American troops came ashore at Utah and Omaha beaches.
The British and Canadians overcame light opposition to capture Gold, Juno and Sword beaches; so did the Americans at Utah. The task was much tougher at Omaha beach, however, where the U.S. First Division battled high seas, mist, mines, burning vehicles, and German coastal batteries, including an elite infantry division, which spewed heavy fire. Many wounded Americans ultimately drowned in the high tide. British divisions, which landed at Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches, and Canadian troops, Juno, also met with heavy German fire.
But by day’s end, 155,000 Allied troops, Americans, British and Canadians, had successfully stormed Normandy’s beaches and were then able to push inland. Within three months, the northern part of France would be freed and the invasion force would be preparing to enter Germany, where they would meet up with Soviet forces moving in from the east.
Before the Allied assault, Hitler’s armies had been in control of most of mainland Europe and the Allies knew that a successful invasion of the continent was central to winning the war. Hitler knew this too, and was expecting an assault on northwestern Europe in the spring of 1944. He hoped to repel the Allies from the coast with a strong counterattack that would delay future invasion attempts, giving him time to throw the majority of his forces into defeating the Soviet Union in the east. Once that was accomplished, he believed an all-out victory would soon be his.
For their part, the Germans suffered from confusion in the ranks and the absence of celebrated commander Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, who was away on leave. At first, Hitler, believing that the invasion was a feint designed to distract the Germans from a coming attack north of the Seine River, refused to release nearby divisions to join the counterattack and reinforcements had to be called from further afield, causing delays.
He also hesitated in calling for armored divisions to help in the defense. In addition, the Germans were hampered by effective Allied air support, which took out many key bridges and forced the Germans to take long detours, as well as efficient Allied naval support, which helped protect advancing Allied troops.
Though D-Day did not go off exactly as planned, as later claimed by British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, for example, the Allies were able to land only fractions of the supplies and vehicles they had intended in France, the invasion was a decided success. By the end of June, the Allies had 850,000 men and 150,000 vehicles in Normandy and were poised to continue their march across Europe.

Thursday brought about the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, celebrating the hard-fought invasion of France to free Europe from the grips of Adolf Hitler. For Americans, it's a day to remember those who left their families and crossed an ocean to give everything for a just cause.
What is it for Hillary Clinton? It's a day to show what a disgusting person she is.
Clinton locked replies to her post, and it's no secret why. Had she not done so, she would have been ripped apart. She can't lock RedState, though, and you better believe I've got some things to say about this stupidity.
Let me say it clearly for those in the back. Donald Trump is not Hitler. He is not a "threat to democracy." No matter who wins in November, the American system of government will continue to operate despite its flaws. There will be no civil war or total collapse of society. Certainly, Trump will not declare himself dictator for life and "destroy democracy," as Clinton is insinuating.
To even make that comparison is vile and grotesque. It belittles the sacrifices of those who died on the beaches of Normandy and during the fighting further inland to secure key objectives. It essentially says that Clinton and other Democrats are their equivalent. That somehow, voting against Trump is an equal act of "protecting democracy" compared to those who braved machine gun fire, crawled through barbwire, and cleared bunkers in vicious close combat.
These delusions of grandeur are astonishing and pathetic. This is what happens when people, devoid of religion and purpose in life, try to project their emptiness onto politics. No, you aren't like D-Day veterans because you showed up to vote against the bad orange man. To even suggest that is insane. That I even have to say that is a sad testament to just how far the Democratic Party has fallen.
All of the hysterical rhetoric surrounding Trump and "democracy" is the work of cynical partisans hoping to take advantage of low-IQ voters. They can't win on policy, and they know it.

President Joe Biden raised eyebrows while attending the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion in Normandy, France — and then apparently had to be escorted away from the festivities while French President Emmanuel Macron remained on-site to greet the veterans.
At one point during the ceremonies, Biden appeared confused about whether he was supposed to remain standing or sit down, resulting in an awkward half-squat as he looked behind him to see where the chair might be. First lady Jill Biden, who quickly raised one hand in front of her mouth, seemed like she could be feeding him directions.

“The vets look more with it than Biden,” Ben Domenech added.
Several of Biden’s defenders jumped in to claim that it was not a big deal because Biden had previously greeted some of the veterans who attended the ceremonies – but other video clips later surfaced of him looking equally lost when he was taken to visit Omaha Beach, the beachhead that saw the greatest number of casualties on D-Day.

A Massive, Moving Tribute To Those We Lost On D-Day.
An ambitious installation that was put together by hundreds of volunteers, the "Fallen 9000" project serves as a reminder of the staggering cost of lost peace.
A tribute to the roughly 9,000 civilians, Allies and German soldiers alike who lost their lives on D-Day, the project involved the painstaking stenciling of 9,000 silhouettes on the Normandy beach at Arromanches where so much blood was once shed.
Masterminded by U.K. sand artists Jamie Wardley and Andy Moss, the project was completed 2013 on Sept. 21, the International Day of Peace, with the help of hundreds of international volunteers.
'The Fallen' is a visual representation of the thousands of human lives lost during the hours of the tide during the WWII Normandy landings on 6 June, 1944.
Eventually all of the sand silhouettes were eventually erased by the incoming tide.
Approximately 160,000 Allied soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy on that fateful day in 1944. At least 10,000 of them became casualties.

Franklin D. Roosevelt’s D-Day Prayer
On the night of June 6, 1944, President Roosevelt went on national radio to address the nation for the first time about the Normandy invasion. His speech took the form of a prayer.
The date and timing of the Normandy invasion had been top secret. During a national radio broadcast on June 5 about the Allied liberation of Rome, President Roosevelt made no mention of the Normandy operation, already underway at that time.
When he spoke to the country on June 6, the President felt the need to explain his earlier silence. Shortly before he went on the air, he added several handwritten lines to the opening of his speech that addressed that point. They read:
"Last night, when I spoke to you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far."

"My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far.
And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer:
Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.
Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith.
They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph.
