Canadian Serial Killer Known As The ‘Pig Farmer Killer’ Brutally Beaten In Prison, Not Expected To Live.
A notorious serial killer who lured dozens of women to his pig farm before killing them has been attacked in prison and is currently on life support.
Robert Pickton, 74, was being held in a segregated unit in a British Columbia, Canada, maximum security prison when he was attacked by another inmate on May 19 with a broken broom handle, the Vancouver Sun reported. As of Tuesday, he remains in a Quebec City hospital in critical condition and is not expected to recover.
Pickton and his brother grew up working on their parents’ pig farm in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, about 17 miles east of Vancouver. When their parents died, the brothers inherited the farm and sold off parts of it to build a facility to hold dance parties, which often included local sex workers and members of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang.
In 1997, Pickton was charged with the attempted murder of Wendy Lynn Eistetter, a sex worker who was stabbed several times. The charge was stayed because Eistetter was a drug user and couldn’t be counted on for her testimony.
In 2002, the brothers were arrested after police searched the farm for illegal firearms. Authorities returned with another search warrant based on things they had seen at the farm that pertained to an investigation into missing women, including personal items belonging to the women.
On February 22, 2002, Pickton was charged with first-degree murder for the deaths of Sereena Abotsway and Mona Wilson. Less than two months later, he was charged with the murders of Jacqueline McDonell, Dianne Rock, and Heather Bottomley. Shortly after that, he was charged for the murders of Andrea Joesbury and Brenda Wolfe.
In September of that year, he was charged with four more murders. In October, he received another four murder charges.
Years later, in May 2005, Pickton was charged with 12 more murders, bringing the total up to 27.
During one of the excavations of Pickton’s property, government officials discovered evidence that suggested Pickton may have ground up some of his victims and mixed them with the pork he sold to customers. A consumer health warning was issued, according to the Globe and Mail.
On December 9, 2007, Pickton was found not guilty on six counts of first-degree murder. The jury instead found him guilty on six counts of second-degree murder. The charges against him for the other women were eventually stayed, since he would not be able to receive additional punishment under Canadian law.
He was sentenced to the maximum allowable punishment – life in prison with no eligibility for parole until after 25 years.
Cynthia Cardinal, whose sister was one of Pickton’s victims, told the Sun that the news of Pickton’s impending death gives her “a little bit of closure,” adding that she could feel her sister’s spirit and that “the devil is gone.”

Peaches Stergo, 36, sentenced to 4 years in prison. The 36-year-old woman has also agreed to pay out approximately $2.8M in restitution and forfeitures.
Peaches Stergo, 36, pleaded guilty to wire fraud after posing as a suitor for the 87-year-old man.
"Peaches Stergo callously defrauded an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor who was simply looking for companionship," said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams. "But she did not get away with it. As today’s sentence demonstrates, perpetrators of romance scams will be held to account for their crimes."
In addition to the prison time, Stergo also agreed to pay $2,830,775 in restitution and forfeit the various luxury items that she purchased.
She met the victim on a dating website several years ago. She then started asking to borrow money to pay an attorney in early 2017 so that he would release funds from an injury settlement that did not exist, according to the indictment.
No settlement funds were ever deposited to her account, but she repeatedly demanded more money over four and a half years from the victim, who wrote 62 checks totaling over $2.8 million.
Stergo also impersonated a TD Bank employee and created fake invoices from the bank to trick the elderly victim, according to the indictment.
Over the course of the fraud, Stergo bought designers clothes from stores like Louis Vuitton and Hermes; bought a boat and multiples cars, including a Corvette and Suburban; and went on expensive vacations where she stayed at places like the Ritz-Carlton.
Meanwhile, the victim lost his life savings and apartment during the scam.
The elderly victim of Stergo's scam was not publicly identified by prosecutors but suffers from cognitive decline. After he ran out of money, Stergo urged him to sell off assets and borrow money to continue the cash flow, prosecutors said.
"As a Holocaust survivor, I have endured unspeakable pain and loss in my life, but never did I imagine that I would be subjected to such a heartless betrayal in my old age," the unidentified victim, whose parents were killed when he was 6, wrote. The man moved to the United States while in his early 20s.
As more Americans have turned to online dating in search of love, romance scams have been on the rise. An estimated 73,000 Americans were defrauded out of a record $1 billion in 2022, according to the consumer group Comparitech.

Nassar, 59, was stabbed twice in the neck, twice in the back and six times in the chest at the United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida.
'He has a collapsed lung,' said Joe Rojas' who is the prison guard union chief.
'He is lucky to be alive and the only reason he is alive, in my opinion, is because of the staff members who were there.'
The extent of his injuries is currently unknown, with sources confirming that he suffered a collapsed lung during the attack at 2.35pm on Sunday, and remains in a stable condition in hospital.
He was convicted in 2018 of sexually assaulting members of the US team, including Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney.
Nassar was serving decades in prison after abusing members of the squad under the guise of medical treatment.
Californication
AB109 and Prop 47 have had a disastrous impact on our communities. These laws have significantly diminished the ability of local prosecutors to hold repeat offenders accountable for their criminal behavior. Unfortunately, the Bethell case is not an exception or an outlier but all too common. The justice system has become a revolving door for thieves . . . They can count on being releas[ed] early from their . . . sentences if there is any punishment at all. This is untenable situation has left us unable to deter this rampant criminality and lawlessness.
Because of prison overcrowding and court rulings, AB109 sought to reduce the state prison population by sending nonviolent felony offenders back to their home counties for incarceration and supervision (in local state prison). Local county jails are squeezed between AB109 mandates and federal court orders on the local jail population. Hence, inmates receive early release. Local jails are not intended for long-term inmates but hold pretrial offenders and those serving less than one-year sentences. Increased caseloads slam local county probation offices. AB109 failed to address serial offenders like Bethell, who are released early or not detained at all. Once released, they wreak havoc in the communities. There must be provisions to up the ante so serial offenders like Bethell are deterred or incarcerated. These serial offenders will quickly commit multiple crimes before being caught again and successfully prosecuted.
In the last 10 years, criminals have become increasingly more violent and brazen. What we are seeing in response to these very lax laws on crime, the push to decriminalize everything, the push to lessen the penalty for something or even take away the penalty for crime is basically emboldening criminals to do more. It's really horrifying for law enforcement and it is horrifying for the public that has to deal with it.
