Trump Administration Rejects UN Global Carbon Tax, Threatens Retaliation

"The proposed framework is effectively a global carbon tax on Americans levied by an unaccountable UN organization."

The Trump Administration announced opposition to a United Nations (UN) proposal to institute a tax on shipping industries to reduce carbon emissions. The announcement also included a threat to countries that support the proposal.
In a joint statement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, the administration condemned the “Net-Zero Framework” approved by a committee of the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) in April.

The proposed amendment aims at setting a new standard of carbon emissions for ships as well as instituting a “global pricing mechanism” for all emissions. It will officially be voted on in October and, if passed, will go into effect in 2027.
The proposed framework will enforce the IMO’s new standards by applying a punitive fee on ships emitting above thresholds while financially rewarding those whose emissions fall within the standards. 
The statement released by the Trump administration condemned this proposed amendment, arguing that it will “directly [drive] up costs for American consumers.”
“Whatever its stated goals, the proposed framework is effectively a global carbon tax on Americans levied by an unaccountable UN organization,” the statement released by the Trump administration reads. “Under this framework, ships will have to pay fees for failing to meet unattainable fuel standards and emissions targets. These fees will drive up energy and transportation and leisure cruise costs.”
“The Trump Administration unequivocally rejects this proposal before the IMO and will not tolerate any action that increases costs for our citizens, energy providers, shipping companies and their customers, or tourists,” the statement says.
The secretaries concluded by stating that the U.S. expects the other IMO members to agree to oppose the amendment, or the U.S. will “not hesitate to retaliate or explore remedies for our citizens should this endeavor fail.”
In a post rebuking the proposed international carbon tax, Secretary of Commerce Lutnick said:

This move to lessen the United Nations’ involvement in U.S. energy production and regulation comes as part of a larger push by the Trump administration to “unleash American energy” by purging the energy sector of foreign influence and beginning massive deregulation attempts.
Notably, on his first day in office, President Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Accords, which he said would save the country over a trillion dollars. The Paris Climate Accords set an increasing standard for member countries to reach and encouraged developed nations like the United States to pay for less developed nations to adopt more climate-sensitive measures.
Domestically, Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is moving to undo Obama-era climate restrictions to deregulate the automotive and other manufacturing industries. If this deregulation goes into effect, it would remove an estimated $1 trillion of hidden taxes on American businesses and families, according to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin.

Marco Rubio Wrecks UN's Hamas Mouthpiece With Sanctions And A Warning

If you needed further proof that the United Nations (UN) is an unnecessary and irrelevant relic in need of dismantling, look no further than the bile being spewed forth by an Italian woman named Francesca Albanese. Ms. Albanese is the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories, which, in theory, means she is an independent expert on human rights' violations who has been given extraordinary latitude by the UN to investigate and report on how Israel is literally Hitler.
Just last week, in a speech before the UN Human Rights Council, Albanese claimed “Israel is responsible for one of the cruelest genocides in modern history," and accused Israel of waging a “genocidal campaign” in Gaza. She also issued a report accusing several American companies, including Lockheed Martin, Caterpillar and Palantir, of profiting from the "genocide," and urged the UN to impose a full arms embargo against Israel, suspend any existing trade agreements and impose legal consequences on companies for what she framed as their role in violating "international law."
Unfortunately for Francesca Albanese, Joe Biden is currently wandering a beach somewhere in Delaware and it's Donald Trump who now lives in the White House. Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are having none of it and are imposing sanctions of their own against one Francesca Paola Albanese.
Rubio first made the announcement Wednesday afternoon on X:

In a follow-up statement on the State Department website, Rubio provided more context, stating that Albanese "directly engaged with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in efforts to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute nationals of the United States or Israel, without the consent of those two countries." The ICC, of course, issued an arrest warrant last year against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for daring to fight back against Hamas following the Oct. 7 massacre.
Sadly for global elites like Francesca Albanese, and as Rubio noted in his statement, neither the United States nor Israel are party to the ICC's Rome Statute. Per an executive order signed by Trump earlier this year, the ICC has zero legal power in the U.S., and they certainly hold no power to punish American companies. It's unclear what kind of reprisals await Albanese, but Rubio promised "to take whatever actions we deem necessary to respond to lawfare, to check and prevent illegitimate ICC overreach and abuse of power, and to protect our sovereignty and that of our allies."

Africa At Crossroads After $13 Billion US Aid Cut, Say Analysts

JOHANNESBURG—African countries reacted with shock when the U.S. government recently cut $13 billion in financial assistance.
But analysts said the move could spur those countries toward better governance, and even critics said it shines a spotlight on the most corrupt nations on the planet.
The United Nations has suggested that millions of lives are at stake because of the withdrawal of U.S. aid.
But Chris Maroleng, of the nonprofit Good Governance Africa, told The Epoch Times that President Donald Trump’s decision to pause funding “shines a bright spotlight on the corruption and selfishness of many African regimes.”
The continent “cannot afford to wallow in self-pity and anger” at the Trump administration, he said.
“What’s most needed in Africa is not a big check, but an honest, hard look at the allocation and use of resources,” Gondyi told The Epoch Times.
“More efficient government revenue collection, stopping corruption and other financial crimes that are so rife in Africa, and broadening tax bases, are just some of the things that must now happen.”
Transparency International’s annual Corruption Perceptions Index measures and analyzes graft in 180 countries.
According to its 2024 index, almost half of the 40 most corrupt countries are in sub-Saharan Africa, the poorest region in the world, and one that for decades has received the most U.S. aid.
It rates 90 percent of Africa’s 54 nations as “highly corrupt.”
In 2023, all but one—Eritrea—received U.S. financial assistance.

 UN Calls for Water Rationing to ‘Secure Climate Justice’
United Nations Wants to Ration Our Water

The United Nations (UN) is calling on the governments of “sovereign” nations around the world to introduce sweeping new regulations that will allow globalists to apply strict controls and limits on the water supply.
The unelected bureaucratic agency argues that rationing water is part of its agenda for supposedly “securing climate justice.”
The regulations would assert major restrictions on the water use of the general public by giving individuals a dystopian daily allowance.
Under such regulations, citizens would be limited to only one shower per day, grass lawns on private homes would be banned, and gardens would be restricted.
To ration the water, the supply to homes would be restricted by a state-controlled meter.
The United States is among the first nations to get on board with the plans, with Democrat President Joe Biden’s obedient administration by signing on the UN treaties.
Last year, the Biden admin published a “fact sheet” to detail what “actions” the president is taking to comply with the UN’s water-control agenda.
In a fact sheet, titled “Biden-⁠Harris Administration Takes New Action to Conserve and Restore America’s Lands and Waters,” the White House stated:
With these new actions, President Biden is delivering on the most ambitious land and water conservation agenda in American history. These actions build on more than two years of the Biden-Harris Administration’s progress and historic investments to advance conservation, restoration, and stewardship nationwide. That record includes:
• Protecting more lands and waters in his first year than any president since JFK
• Setting the country’s first-ever national conservation goal to conserve at least 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by 2030
• Signing an Executive Order to better protect America’s forests
• Securing the largest investment in climate, environmental justice, and conservation ever
• Putting the entire U.S. Arctic Ocean off limits to new oil and gas development
• Restoring and strengthening protections for cherished places, including Bears Ears, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and Northeast Canyons and Seamounts National Monuments, as well as the Tongass National Forest
• Designating the Camp Hale – Continental Divide National Monument in Colorado
Note that the Biden admin says it locks away thousands of square miles of ocean from drilling or fishing.
What it doesn’t say is that the “Waters of the United States” gives the government control of every run-off ditch and puddle.
This massive taking, which will, by the end of it, remove one billion acres from American use, locks up pretty much all natural resources, on the grounds of “scarcity.”
Every single order and legislative initiative hews to this one idea: humans are killing the Earth and we are running out of everything except sun and wind, which is the future of “green energy.”
California, which had been in a “drought” for the last 20 years until the recent spate of torrential rains (not “climate change” but part of the West’s natural boom-or-bust water cycle), has meant that farmers and ranchers in California, literally a bread basket for the nation, have been deliberately starved of water.
For 150 years, the Western states engaged in building what I consider to be the Eighth Wonder of the World, the water system that could feed, clothe, and house the known universe.
For the past 25 years, the globalist green agenda, guided by the UN, the World Economic Forum (WEF), Rockefeller, Ford, and a half dozen other pernicious foundations, has been breaking that water system.
More than one thousand significant dams have been taken out, and thousands upon thousands of little dams and weirs in the upland ranges and forests have been removed.
The result of this has been, and its purpose is, to starve human development, food production, and economic well-being.
In fact, California has plenty of water. It is hidden and masterfully.
The United Nations, in every single country, is primarily focused on locking up water.
Without water, everything dies.
Controlling water means you control everything.
Water, of course, is a renewable resource but the U.N. declares it is not.
According to the UN, “global warming” means everything is going to dry out.
Globalists have not been shy about their water rationing agenda either.
As Slay News previously reported, WEF members have been openly discussing plans for controlling the water supply.
A WEF official declared that a coming water crisis will be used to control the public and advance the globalist agenda of the unelected corporate elite.

During the WEF’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland in 2022, WEF spokesperson Professor Mariana Mazzucato argues that a crisis centered around “water” will “deliver” where “Covid” and “climate change” both “failed.”
“You need water,” Mazzucato asserted during a panel discussion before an audience of salivating globalists.
During the discussion, Mazzucato, who is listed as one of the WEF’s “agenda contributors,” was lamenting how Covid and “climate change” failed to usher in a world government.
She then laid out her case for how a water crisis will be the catalyst that imposes a world government upon humanity.
“Did we actually manage to vaccinate everyone in the world? No,” Mazzucato, founding Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, said during a WEF forum on the “Economics of Water.”
“So highlighting water as a global commons and what it means to work together and see it both out of a global commons perspective but also the self-interest perspective, because it does have that parallel, is not only important, but it’s also important because we haven’t managed to solve those problems which had similar attributes.
“And water is something that people understand.
“Climate change is a bit abstract,” she said, waving her arms in the air.
“Some people understand it really well, some understand it a bit, some just don’t understand it.”
“Water, every kid knows how important it is to have water.
“When you’re playing football and you’re thirsty, you need water,” she noted.
“So there’s also something about really getting citizen engagement around this and really in some ways experimenting with this notion of the common good.”
“Can we actually deliver this time in ways we have failed miserably other times?” she added.
“And hopefully we won’t keep failing on the other things, but anyway.”

UN, WHO, and WEF Have Just Been Declared Terrorist Organizations By a Republican County Assembly in Florida.

The Lee County Republican Assembly, which is a grass roots conservative Republican organization, passed a resolution introduced by Joseph Samsone, declaring the UN, WHO, and WEF, terrorist organizations.
The resolution also declares cooperation with these organizations an act of treason against the United States and the State of Florida. Unfortunately, the Executive Board of the Lee County Republican Party refused to allow the resolution to come up for a vote to the full Executive Committee, which would have likely passed the resolution as well.
The Resolution passed by the Lee County Republican Assembly calls on the Florida Legislature and Governor to pass legislation declaring cooperation with the United Nations, World Health Organization, and World Economic Forum, an act of treason against the United States, and the State of Florida.

Whereas the United Nations, the World Health Organizations, and the World Economic Forum are terrorist organizations seeking to depopulate humanity, and to usurp the sovereignty of the United States and the State of Florida; and
Whereas the World Health Organization, World Economic Forum, and the United Nations are actively involved in a global coup; and
Whereas this coup is attempting utilize the Federal government and State Governments to implement United Nations, World Health Organization, and World Economic Forum policies; and

Whereas legitimate international treaties have no jurisdiction over domestic policies;
Be it Resolved:
The Lee County Republican Assembly calls upon Governor DeSantis and the Florida legislature to pass legislation declaring cooperation with the United Nations, World Health Organization, and World Economic Forum, an act of treason against the United States, and the State of Florida.

UNRWA Caught Stealing And Selling Humanitarian Aid For Gazans.

We already know that United Nations Relief and Works Agency employees are linked to Hamas and other Islamic terrorist groups.
According to the report, Palestinians claimed that staff working for the UN agency “have their homes full of aid.”
UNRWA has been caught stealing and then selling humanitarian aid that came into Gaza that was intended to be given to Palestinian civilians, UN Watch reported on Wednesday, citing reports published by Palestinians in “an UNRWA-related chatroom.”
The Watch report also claims that those who report UNRWA‘s actions with the humanitarian aid “face reprisals.”
According to the report, Palestinians claimed that staff working for the UN agency “have their homes full of aid.” Additionally, a UNRWA warehouse chief sold 50 cartons of food for $5,000.
Items such as pampers, canned sweets, and tissues were sold at a UNRWA school door. This comes amid statement by UNRWA Commissioner-General Phillipe Lazzarini, who was quoted in the UN Watch report saying “there is more food available… it still does not mean that the food is accessible” as he was calling countries to increase direct cash assistance to Gazans.
UN Watch documents this extensively which also notes plenty of anti-Semitism among UNRWA employees. None of this should be a surprise, because there is a long history of UN agencies being problematic, to put it mildly. There was the massive oil for food fraud involving Iraq and the UN. Peacekeepers assaulting and raping women in 3rd world nations. Theft of aid in those 3rd world nations. And so much more. Oh, and
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency announced on Sunday that it had conducted a strike on the command and control center belonging to the Hamas terrorist organization located within the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees) compound in the central region of the Gaza Strip.
The IDF spokesperson stated that the strike was a response to recent terrorist activities directed towards IDF forces and humanitarian aid efforts.

If The United Nations Were A Country, Israel Would Have To Declare War On It.
The UN spent decades attacking Israel. Its employees simply took the next logical step.

In 1975, on the 37th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the UN General Assembly adopted a Soviet-led resolution equating Zionism, or the idea of a Jewish homeland, with “racism.”

 

Sure, the world would see genocides, manmade famines, violent repression of ethnic minorities, authoritarian regimes, terror states, theocratic revolutions, juntas, concentration camps, and communist despotism over the next four-plus decades. But this international parliament of depraved totalitarians and extremists would never lose focus. Since 1975, the UN has condemned Israel, the only free nation in the Middle East, more than any other in the world. Many years, in fact, the tiny country has been targeted with more resolutions than all others combined.
In addition to emboldening and legitimizing Israel’s enemies, including the pioneer of modern terrorism, the UN has also adopted an Arab myth in its effort to erase Jewish identity. Most infamous is a UNESCO resolution denying Jews any historical connection to their faith’s holiest sites at the Temple Mount and Western Wall — a contention that should come as a surprise to anyone who’s read a book. The motion was supported by 24 nations, including Security Council members Russia and China. Only six countries opposed it.
Then there is the United Nations Human Rights Council, whose mission is purportedly to protect “human rights around the world.” Donald Trump pulled funding and refused to allow the U.S. to participate in these Third World, Jew-hating bull sessions. When Joe Biden became president, he rejoined the council. He did so on the same day as Eritrea, which usually ranks below North Korea in those freedom “indexes,” just to give you an idea of the quality of the membership.
This year the sickening farce is led by Morocco. Members include Cuba and China.
Still, as reprehensible as all this history is, no one in any of those agencies, as far as we know, has actively participated in the killing of Jews. One can no longer say the same for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), another agency Biden rejoined when becoming president.
We now know that at least 12 of UNRWA’s employees took part in the Hamas massacre of Jews on Oct. 7, not merely offering logistical help or coordination, but sometimes participating in the actual kidnapping and murdering of civilians. As of this writing, the UN fired nine of its employees — which seems like a small price to pay for murder. The U.S., Britain, Germany, and Australia, among others, have temporarily paused funding to UNRWA, which has been a major tool for funneling international money to Hamas.
Progressives, naturally, were aghast. Not at the UN’s role in the massacre, but at the funding freeze. “Among an organization of 13,000 UN aid workers, risking the starvation of millions over grave allegations of 12 is indefensible,” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez explained.
Oh, only 12 people employed by the United Nations participated in the murder, rape, and kidnapping of Jewish women and children, you say? Seems like a lot to me, actually.
Indeed, Israel provided the U.S. with intelligence proving around 1,200 — or about 10 percent of UN employees in Gaza — have direct links to Hamas or Islamic Jihad. Nearly half of UNRWA’s employees are close relatives of members of various terrorist groups. When UN Watch translated 249,000 user posts in the UNRWA chat group right after the terror attack, thousands of them praised Hamas (“May Allah keep their feet steady and guide their aim.”) Most of those excited by the news were likely teachers. And that is vital to remember.
Whatever the number, however, please spare us the argument that the agency bears no responsibility for the actions of its employees. Israel has long warned that the UN was aiding and abetting Hamas. UNRWA knew what was going on. We have known for decades that the agency employs members of Islamic terror organizations. And that’s just the start.
Created as a temporary agency after the Israelis won their independence in 1949, UNRWA was tasked with providing social services and education for those “refugee camps” in Arab nations. The number of refugees that supposedly fled from Israel after the Jews was less than 700,000. More than 70 years later, there are allegedly 5.9 million Arab “refugees.”
When Palestinians were living under Jordanian, Syrian, Egyptian, and Lebanese control, not one of those nations attempted to create a new state. Not one integrated those fleeing a war they started. Palestinians were kept in “camps,” often underwritten by the UN, in an effort to create an intractable situation for Israel and a convenient issue to exploit.
Israel, incidentally, accepted around the same number of refugees after 1948, most of them expelled from their ancestral homes throughout the Islamic world. Until 1952, the UNRWA also helped Jewish and Arab “refugees” within Israel. That was a long time ago. There are no “refugee camps” in Israel anymore. Not for those who came from Iran or Iraq or Morocco or Kenya or Ethiopia or Russia. Or anywhere else.
The UNRWA, tasked with running schools, has not only propped up terror groups on Israel’s border, but it has educated successive generations of Arabs in hating Jews and the West, and believing in the fantastical “right of return.” The UN not only continues to foster the false hope that Arabs will rule a Judenfrei “West Bank” and Jerusalem, but that “refugees” will one day return to Israel proper. The return of nearly 6 million “refugees” would mean the end of Israel. Which is the point. This fantasy has helped scuttle virtually every attempted peace deal.
Tens of millions of people around the world have been victims of major conflicts in the world since the Arab world first failed to destroy Israel. Over those years, Palestinians have been mired in a self-inflicted quagmire of poverty and war while the UN has helped perpetuate the victimhood and extremism. It’s no surprise some of its employees finally decided to take the next logical step.

US pauses funding for UNRWA after staff accused of involvement in October 7 massacres.

The United States is troubled by allegations that 12 UNRWA employees may have been involved in the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and has temporarily paused funding, the State Department says.
“The Department of State has temporarily paused additional funding for UNRWA while we review these allegations and the steps the United Nations is taking to address them,” spokesperson Matthew Miller says.
“There must be complete accountability for anyone who participated in the heinous attacks of October 7,” he adds.

The European Union’s top diplomat says he’s also “extremely concerned” by the allegations and that the bloc is in touch with UNRWA, but doesn’t announce a similar halt in funding.
“We are in contact with UNRWA, expect it to provide full transparency on the allegations and to take immediate measures against staff involved,” Josep Borrell says in a statement, while pledging to “assess further steps and draw lessons based on the result of the full and comprehensive investigation.”

On Tuesday, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, blistered the UN as it prepared to vote on a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Gaza.
The UN displayed once again its contempt for Israel and its whitewashing of its enemies; the UN website admitted, “Prior to the resolution, two amendments making specific reference to extremist group Hamas were voted down by members.” The resolution ultimately passed with only 10 countries voting against it: the U.S., Israel, Austria, Czechia, Guatemala, Liberia, Micronesia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, and Paraguay. Twenty-three other countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Argentina, Malawi, the Netherlands, Ukraine, South Sudan, and Uruguay, abstained.
“Again, we find ourselves about to vote upon yet another hypocritical resolution,” Erdan began. “Not only does this resolution fail to condemn Hamas for their crimes against humanity, it doesn’t even mention Hamas at all. This is a resolution that will only prolong the death and destruction in the region.”
“On October 6, there was a ceasefire and it was abruptly violated; not by Israel, but by 3,000 Hamas Nazis who invaded my country; raping women, beheading babies, burning families alive, and deliberately exterminating innocent civilians like insects,” he recalled.
He turned to the countries who have sided against Israel in its war on Hamas: “What would your country do if you were in Israel’s shoes? Call for a ceasefire? What would Moscow do? Beijing? Istanbul? How would you respond? Everyone here knows exactly.”
Erdan noted that the December 1 pause in the war was violated by Hamas firing rockets into Israel once more. “Those who support this resolution are giving the terrorists a free pass,” he declared. “A ceasefire means one thing and one thing only: ensuring the survival of Hamas; ensuring the survival of genocidal terrorists committed to the annihilation of Israel and Jews.”
Erdan quoted Hamas leaders saying October 7 was a “rehearsal.” “A ceasefire is a death sentence for countless more Israelis and Gazans,” he declared. Then he gave the members of the UN a visual aid as he stated, “I have an idea: If you want a real ceasefire, here is the right address.” Erdan then held up a large card that read: “For a Ceasefire dial +970-599373765.” Next to a photo of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the card also read, “Ask for Yahya Sinwar.”
“This is the phone number of Hamas’ office in Gaza,” Erdan stated. “You can all call +970-599373765 and ask for Yahya Sinwar. Tell Hamas to put down their arms, turn themselves in, and return our hostages. This will bring a complete ceasefire that will last forever.”
“So why are you not doing this?” he asked rhetorically. “Why are you not holding Hamas accountable? Ironically today is the United Nations International Day of Neutrality, the day on which the UN reminds itself to be an impartial mediator in the escalating conflict. Ignoring the war crimes of genocidal terrorists on today of all days; this body further proves its utter irrelevance. What a disgrace.”
“Hamas does not respond to General Assembly resolutions; Hamas responds only to threats on its survival,” he pointed out. “Continuing Israel’s operation in Gaza is the only way any hostages will be released. This disgraceful resolution serves only one purpose: to try to tie Israel’s hands and allow Hamas to continue its reign of terror.”
“No piece of paper, especially one that is adopted by a biased, politicized majority, will prevent Israel from defending itself against those that seek our destruction. Israel is fighting a war for our future. There is not a single member state here, not a single member state here, that would act differently in a similar situation,” he concluded.

 Israel's ambassador to the United Nations is ripping the "horrible views" that U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres expressed at a meeting of the Security Council on Tuesday and is calling for his resignation.   

Ambassador Gilad Erdan described Guterres’ remarks as "shocking" for stating that the Oct. 7 terror attacks on Israel by Hamas "did not happen in a vacuum" and that the "Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation."
"The shocking speech by the @UN Secretary-General at the Security Council meeting, while rockets are being fired at all of Israel, proved conclusively, beyond any doubt, that the Secretary-General is completely disconnected from the reality in our region and that he views the massacre committed by Nazi Hamas terrorists in a distorted and immoral manner," Erdan posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Erdan then demanded that Guterres resign, the first time an Israeli ambassador has called for a sitting U.N. secretary-general to step down, an Israeli official confirmed to Fox News Digital.
"The @UN Secretary-General, who shows understanding for the campaign of mass murder of children, women, and the elderly, is not fit to lead the UN," he wrote in a follow-up post. "I call on him to resign immediately. There is no justification or point in talking to those who show compassion for the most terrible atrocities committed against the citizens of Israel and the Jewish people. There are simply no words."
During his speech, Guterres said the "situation in the Middle East is growing more dire by the hour" and that the "war in Gaza is raging and risks spiraling throughout the region," according to a transcript.
"I have condemned unequivocally the horrifying and unprecedented 7 October acts of terror by Hamas in Israel," Guterres continued. "Nothing can justify the deliberate killing, injuring and kidnapping of civilians – or the launching of rockets against civilian targets."
Yet Guterres also said, "It is important to also recognize the attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum."
"The Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation. They have seen their land steadily devoured by settlements and plagued by violence; their economy stifled; their people displaced and their homes demolished. Their hopes for a political solution to their plight have been vanishing," the secretary-general said.
"But the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the appalling attacks by Hamas. And those appalling attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people," he added.
Responding to Guterres at the U.N., Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said, "As we meet here today, young babies, children are held in Gaza. This is beyond imagination. A living nightmare."
"They are victims of evil," he added. "Mr. Secretary-General, in what world do you live? Definitely, this is not our world."
Then U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, "Where is the outrage? Where is the revulsion? Where is the rejection? Where is the explicit condemnation of these horrors? We must affirm the right of any nation to defend itself and to prevent such horror from repeating itself."
"We call on all member states to send a firm, united message to any state or non-state actor that is considering opening another front in this conflict against Israel or who may target Israel's partners, including the United States," Blinken also said. "Don't, don't throw fuel on the fire. Members of this council and permanent members in particular have a special responsibility to prevent this conflict from spreading."
Erdan later said at a press conference that "The U.N. is failing" and "you, Mr. Secretary-General, have lost all morality and impartiality because when you say those terrible words that these heinous attacks did not happen in a vacuum, you are tolerating terrorism. And by tolerating terrorism, you are justifying terrorism."
"I think that the secretary-general must resign because, from now on, every day that he's here in this building, unless he apologizes immediately – today we called [on] him to apologize. There is no justification to the existence of this building," Erdan continued. "This building was established to prevent atrocities. How can the secretary-general, with his words, justify in any way the terrible atrocities that happened to our civilians, innocent civilians?"
