When we went to Utah quite a few years ago, we met a guy in an old Range Rover wandering around in one of the canyons with a worn out rock hammer and a cloth sack. We chatted with him for a while about where we were from and places he recommended seeing and after about 30 minutes he told me he wanted to give my wife a 'specimen ' because she loves rocks. He reached in the sack and pulled out a rock, nothing really special about it but the shape. My wife was holding it and checking it out, asked him what kind of rock it was. He said "It's a turd." After I reached down and picked it up he told her it might as well be referred to as a rock because it was fossilized dinosaur crap. She accepted it and thanked him and now it is one of the first things she shows people in her collection.
