With massive structural damage to the parking garage. This occurred Friday afternoon.
A massive fire in a parking garage at the Jacksonville airport forced evacuations, a closure of the airport, the loss of 50 cars, and structural damage to the building.
There is not yet confirmation of the make and model of the vehicle that started this horrible conflagration. Local authorities have not yet confirmed that the vehicle that started this fire was in fact an EV, but I have little doubt.
In a press conference, Mayor Donna Deegan said there were about 50 cars that were damaged from the fire that was still burning, but under control. Deegan also said the fire started on the second floor with one car and spread to other cars.
Fire chief Keith Powers is reported as stating that that there was a partial collapse on the second and third floors, then a secondary collapse about 30 minutes later, to which he added, “We’re not putting firefighters in there.”
Here is a picture of the original car spontaneously erupting in flames, with fire blasting sideways and igniting neighboring cars.
If my suspicions are correct, and this fire that caused parts of an airport parking garage to collapse was due to an EV runaway thermal, we need to get serious about prohibiting EVs from parking in multi-car garages.
No one would argue for the right to park a McVeigh-type fertilizer bomb in a parking garage, so why are we allowing unstable lithium car bombs into public garages?
