ReplyDeleteI've had a "bee in my bonnet" for decades regarding welfare abuse. After college I worked for a furniture and appliance rental company. Such a scam where you provided "luxury" items rented monthly to poor folk who wanted it NOW as opposed to waiting to accumulate enough to buy outright. Ending up paying almost twice as much for the items too! In any event I recall installing a VCR for a 300+ lb black woman in Buffalo, trying to avoid the critters crawling all over the back of the TV. She had a deep Southern drawl and when I asked her where she was from she stated"Georgia!" I asked why she chose to move to Buffalo, NY and she unashamedly replied "They pays mo' welfare up here."
ReplyDeleteIt really surprised me how many people I thought were smart fell for that "Rent-To-Own" scam. We still have two of those businesses here in the area where I live. If I had no ethics and the ability to time travel, I'd go back and open one of those stores in every city.
