Cleaning Day(s)

I am at the point where my computer is having too many issues due to its age that I will be purchasing a new computer soon. I am going to spend today trying to get rid of things I have been saving for far too long to aid in the transfer. I'm having to enlist the aid of one of my brothers because this computer crap is too in depth for me. Posting will be scarce, hopefully just today, but it could be the next couple of days.

The Mac I'm using now, I've had for 13 years and it's got to the point where it won't go to a lot of sites because of certificate issues and other tech issues that I don't totally understand. In the last day or two, it has refused to allow me access to X/Twitter. I don't post there hardly at all but I do monitor quite a few accounts. I haven't been able to use my primary e-mail account with my desktop for months now. Its just been piling up and my brother who is a old school techie is helping me pick out a replacement. Hopefully I can make the switch in the next week but I have to have one of my brothers here to assist with the switch.

  1. I have a dryer in my basement manufactured when they came in "it will last forever" models. It was used when I got it from a thrift store for $85.

In contrast, I have to replace my stove and refrigerator every so often because of planned obsolescence. Computers are worse. And my 2008 vehicle just joined the club because Ford discontinued a part (a vechicle less than 20 years old). I literally have to go have the part manufactured in order to drive my car again.

The HVAC in my basement is large, old Jeep green, and ugly, but has never hiccuped. The compressor outside once took a lightning strike, still going.

I bought a new computer last year. Already failed.

    1. Well, we've been extremely lucky with most of our appliances and generators and such. We have always stuck with old school appliances when we could. The less technology, the better, as far as we're concerned. The computer is just so old that the planned obsolescence app has started kicking in.

  2. How tech savvy is your brother? What do you use your computer for (web browsing, email, documents,?)?

I ask because you can sometimes get more life out of a computer by installing Linux. I've been running it since the early 00s. Games used to be the biggest problem, but I'm told it's much better these days. A completely non-tech friend went Linux 3 years ago and (mostly) doesn't miss Microsoft Windows (she has a Cricket printer that has issues). Just a thought.

But whatever you do, backing up data is always a good thing (unless deleting it is called for). Good luck.

    1. Both of the brothers helping me do this make their living in IT and programming. The problem is that the one that is experienced in Mac/Apple/Linux lives in CT. The other one lives near Tampa.
So when I get the new computer, which is probably going to be a mini-Mac, the brother in Tampa will come up here and connect with the brother in CT and hopefully it will happen without issues.
I have a good aux backup and also there is the cloud.
Mostly I use the computer for browsing, blogging and meme storage warehouse.
Thanks for the concern, Unferth. I'm really hoping we have it under control ... fingers crossed.

  3. I am switching to Linux next week. I am having my computer tech guru guy do it as I have some medical software loaded that I don't want gomered if I do it. He is familiar with the software as I had some trouble when I was issued it to use and he got it working like a dream of H2O... Good luck with your conversion...

    1. Good luck with yours too.
I'm using Mac because my brother, who makes a very good living working on computer issues, offered to buy the entire setup for me. At the time I was facing some financial adversity, not down and out, but I was fixing to be without a computer. It was right around Veterans Day and he told me he wanted to do it to thank me. He never served.
And now, I just figure that having used a Mac all this time, I'm familiar with it and I don't feel like changing.

Taking An "Odyssey" Dump

Okay, I haven't seen this movie and I never will but I understand how they're trying to "queer" historical icons and stori...
