I was in the Boy Scouts for many years and it was a great experience. Our Scout Master was a fairly influential man in this area and he carried us on so many camping trips and also trips to quite a few State and National Parks. He used his own money to purchase a used school bus and we made it into our troop bus. He also shared the use of it for several school events and for day outings for the Cub Scout troop. I was an assistant Cub Scout leader for several years after that and tried to help them enjoy the same level of scouting we had in my Boy Scout Troop.
Years later I heard several rumors of problems with the leadership and some parents within the Scouts and I hoped they weren't true. But over the years it became apparent that there were some serious problems. Then when I heard they were letting the gay and lesbian groups infiltrate, I knew the Scouts as I knew them were gone. And then all the sexual lawsuits. And then they lied and said everything was corrected and right after that they started allowing girls and 'gender-confused' kids and freak Scoutmasters and leaders. Then it was no longer the Boy Scouts and it became Scouting America.
It is a tremendous shame. An abomination to a once great organization.
Hopefully change is in the winds.
Let the Satanic former BSA die, it is unsalvageable. There are other programs working on the same traditional youth development concept that the BSA was founded to foster. Seek them out, look into them, and put your boys into those private programs. Let them remain regional in nature, private , and locally controlled. Building national level organizations and incorporating them leads to the hiring of profiteering executives and the poison of public funding. From there the path is always toward grifting by the full time "non profit" NGO staff and a loss of control of the program to hostile vested interests. If you cannot find a reasonable program for your boy you should start an informal one with the other fathers in your community. Focus on archery, marksmanship, gun safety, camping, hiking, field craft, boating/sailing, auto mechanics, and the like and you will do well. If you keep it informal and each family pays for their own participation, the Marxists cannot infiltrate your group and hijack your program into the pervert agenda.

DeleteIt would also be in the best interest, IMO, to promote Godly beliefs in the organization.
I'm an Eagle. Our troop had many Eagles. Our Scoutmaster was a lawyer. Our Scoutmaster was also stationed in Thailand with the Air Force during Vietnam. Our Scoutmaster was into photography and had his own darkroom.
ReplyDeleteMy dad was briefly in Scouts as a kid in the late '50's, but it was a bad experience due to the Scoutmaster being a pedophile. My dad became Assistant Scoutmaster because he wanted my brother and I to have good Scouting experiences, and would shoot anybody who tried pedo-stuff with us.
My Scoutmaster retired soon after my dad died, when I was 16. 4 years later, my Scoutmaster was arrested after his step-son, my best frien, broke down in college.
They arrested my former Scoutmaster after finding hundreds of VHS tapes and thousands of still photos at the camp my dad and I and other scouts helped him add on to and re-roof.
My former Scoutmaster wore his Grosse Pointe Yacht Club hat in Jackson prison and soon got his eggs scrambled with a sharp object.
There are bad people who want to do bad things to children, gravitate to positions of power over children (especially children of single mothers) and these bad people must be given no quarter no matter their station in society.
Condolences for any of those kids who had to survive through that horrific experience. And for your dad passing away while you were still young.

Always be watchful. Never let anyone have unlimited time with your children without checks. Tell your kids that they don't have to respect ANYONE who asks them to keep secrets from their parents.
Back in the 70's I was in cub scouts, but our troop was mainly led by the moms for whatever reason, I guess the dads were too busy working. It was basically arts and crafts with very little actual scouting stuff. I quite after a year or two.
ReplyDeleteFlash to the 90's and 2000's with my kids. I led the cub scouts and tried everything I could to make it camping, fishing, archery, etc. for boys to learn manly stuff. My kids made it to the Webelo level and then decided to quit, so that pretty much ended it. I did get one of my pinewood derby cars to regional (yeah, the dads built the cars - duh) and was set to win until my kid stumbled and dropped it. Bent and axle and that was that.
But it was obvious by the 2000's that things were falling apart. We did what we could to hold the local stuff together, but the larger organization was falling apart. I never saw any of the pedo stuff at my level, but there were lots of stories about it elsewhere. Damn shame we can't just take obviously guilty pedo's and hang them in the city square. I think public executions are due for a comeback.
I'm glad you put in the effort. A lot of fathers don't do that. I'm sure your efforts made a good impact on your kids.

ReplyDeleteA lot of people did but in the larger cities the organization was big enough to shame people with calling them names. Shaming the people who were anti-gay.
DeleteThat didn't work so well in the smaller cities like where I'm from. Someone got a reputation like that and they were ostracized from any children's activities.
