Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, both Muslims, were part of a "counter-protest" in support of Mamdani. According to authorities, they lit one device and dropped another. Both tested positive for explosive material, and New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the attack is being investigated as an "act of ISIS-inspired terrorism."
Astonishingly, Mamdani's statement on the matter didn't mention the Islamic attackers. Instead, he attempted to frame the attack as coming from "white supremacists."

This was a vile protest rooted in white supremacy entitled "Stop the Islamic takeover of New York City." I'm the first Muslim mayor of our city. Anti-Muslim bigotry is nothing new to me, nor is it anything new to the one million or so New Yorkers who know this city as our home.”
