January 10th In Music
1949 - The vinyl record format war heats up as RCA introduces the 45-RPM, 7-inch record. It eventually replaces the 78-RPM record for "singles”, one song on each side. The format takes off in the early years of the rock era.
1976 - CW McCall went to No. 1 on the US singles chart with 'Convoy’. CW McCall was in fact an advertising agent whose real name was Bill Fries.

1943 - Jim Croce. US singer/songwriter who had a 1973 US No. 1 single with 'Time In A Bottle'. He died on 9.20.1973.
1945 - Rod Stewart. Singer, songwriter, The Hoochie Coochie Men, Steampacket, Shotgun Express, Jeff Beck Group, the Faces US No. 17 single 'Stay With Me'. Solo, 1971 US No. 1 single 'Maggie May', plus five other UK No. 1's & over 35 Top 40 hits. His 1971 debut album 'Every Picture Tell's A Story' was the first album ever to simultaneously be No. 1 in the UK & US. Born in London, England.
1946 - Aynsley Dunbar. Drummer for Journey, Whitesnake, and Jefferson Airplane. Born in Liverpool, England.

1948 - Donald Fagen. Steely Dan. 1973 US No. 11 single 'Reeling In The Years' and nine other US Top 30 hits. Born in Passaic, New Jersey.
1955 - Michael Schenker. Guitarist. Scorpions and UFO. Born in West Germany.
1964 - Brad Roberts. Crash Test Dummies. His super-deep voice powers their big hit, "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm." Born in Winnipeg, Canada.

1964 - Ring Of Fire, The Best of Johnny Cash, became the first No. 1 album when Billboard debuted their Country Album Chart. It was his sixteenth album in total and the first compilations album by Cash. (I know it’s not rock, but it’s totally worthy of mention.)
1967 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded 'Purple Haze' at De Lane Lea studios in London. Hendrix later stated 'The Purple Haze,' was about a dream he had and that he was walking under the sea.

1968 - The Doors' album Strange Days is certified gold.
1969 - Led Zeppelin's debut album was released in the UK and America. Recorded at Olympic Studios in Barnes, London, the album took only about 36 hours of studio time to complete at a cost of just $2,423, most of the tracks being recorded 'live' in the studio with very few overdubs. The album spent a total of 71 weeks on the UK chart.
1974 - The Steve Miller Band were at No. 1 on the US singles chart with 'The Joker', the group's first of three No. 1's.
January 13th In Music
1962 - Chubby Checker went back to No. 1 on the US singles chart with 'The Twist'. The song first went to No. 1 in Sept 1960 and became the only record in American chart history to top the charts on two separate occasions.
1968 - Johnny Cash played a show, which was recorded, for his forthcoming live album at Folsom Prison, near Sacramento, California in front of 2,000 inmates. When released, the lead single, 'Folsom Prison Blues' (an update of his 1956 hit) became one of the most famous recordings of his career.

1955 - Fred White. Drummer with Earth, Wind & Fire, who had the 1975 US No. 1 single 'Shining Star'. The band has received 20 Grammy nominations and were the first African-American act to sell out Madison Square Garden.
January 14th In Music
1961 - Elvis Presley's 'GI Blues' started a seven-week run at No. 1 on the UK chart. Also on this day Corporal Elvis (53310761) was promoted to Acting-Sergeant in the US Army, receiving a pay increase of $22.94 per month.
1978 - Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album hits No. 1 for a record 31st week on the US chart.
January 15th In Music
1972 - Don McLean's 'American Pie' started a four week run at No. 1 in the US singles chart. The song is somewhat of a recounting of "The Day the Music Died" (a term taken from the song) the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr.), and the aftermath. The song was listed as the No. 5 song on the RIAA project Songs of the Century. The single runs 8:36 and you have to flip the 45 over to hear all of it.
1974 - With '50s nostalgia trending, Happy Days premieres on ABC with "Rock Around The Clock" as its theme song.
1974 - Brownsville Station's "Smokin' In The Boys' Room" is certified Gold.
1977 - The Eagles hit No. 1 on the US album chart with Hotel California the group's third US No. 1 album. In the 2013 documentary History of the Eagles, Don Henley said the song was about "a journey from innocence to experience...that's all".
1977 - Leo Sayer's "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" hits No. 1.
1983 - Phil Collins had his first UK No. 1 single with his version of 'You Can't Hurry Love,' a hit for The Supremes in 1966.

1948 - Ronnie Van Zant. Vocalist with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Had the 1974 US No. 8 single 'Sweet Home Alabama' and the 1982 UK No. 21 single 'Freebird'. Born in Jacksonville, Florida. Van Zant died on 10.20.1977
1952 - Melvyn Gale. Cello, with Electric Light Orchestra. Born in London, England. Had the 1979 US No. 4 single 'Don't Bring Me Down' plus 26 other Top 40 hits. ELO have sold over 50 million records worldwide.
January 16th In Music
1996 - Jamaican police mistake Jimmy Buffett for a drug smuggler and shoot at his seaplane (the Hemisphere Dancer) after it lands in the water. Bono of U2 is on board with his family, along with Island Records head Chris Blackwell. No one is hit. Buffett memorializes the incident in the song “Jamaica Mistaica.”
