2016 - The Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey died at the age of 67 in New York City after years in the fast lane took a toll on Frey, who suffered from a host of ailments. Frey co-founded the Eagles in 1971 with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. After the breakup of the Eagles in 1980, Frey embarked on a successful solo career and went on to score the Top 40 hits 'The One You Love', 'Smuggler's Blues', 'The Heat Is On', and 'You Belong to the City'.

1970 - The Easy Rider soundtrack, featuring "Born To Be Wild," "If 6 Was 9" and "Ballad of Easy Rider," is certified Gold.

1971 - The Beatles' "Helter Skelter" is played at Charles Manson's murder trial as evidence. Manson claimed the song was about an impending race war, and led to murderous acts.

1980 - Pink Floyd's The Wall started a 15-week run at No. 1 on the US album chart. The group’s third US No. 1, it went on to sell over 23 million copies in the US alone. The Wall is still the third largest grossing album in the US.

1943 - Janis Joplin. Singer, who had a 1971 U.S No. 1 single with 'Me And Bobby McGee' and the 1971 U.S No. 1 album 'Pearl'. Born in Port Arthur, Texas. Janis died on 10.4.1970.

1947 - Rod Evans. Early lead singer of Deep Purple who had the US No. 14 single 'Hush' which was taken from the bands debut 1969 album Shades of Deep Purple. Born in Buckinghamshire, England.

1948 - Harvey Hinsley. Hot Chocolate, who had the 1975 US No. 3 single 'You Sexy Thing' the 1977 UK No. 1 single 'So You Win Again' and over 25 other Top 40 hits. Born in Northampton, England.

1950 - Francis Buchholz. German rock band Scorpions. Their 1990 power ballad 'Wind Of Change' topped the European charts and was a No. 4 hit in the US. The Scorpions hold the record for the best-selling single by a German artist and band.

1951 - Dewey Bunell. America, 1972 US No. 1 single 'Horse With No Name'. Born in Harrogate, Yorkshire, England.

1957 - Mickey Virtue. Keyboards, with UB40, who had the 1988 US No. 1 single 'Red Red Wine' and over 30 other top 40 hits. Born in Birmingham, England.

1977 - Jimmy Buffett releases his seventh studio album, Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes, which features his signature song "Margaritaville." Peaking at No. 8, the tropical-themed track remains his highest entry on the Billboard Hot 100.

1933 - Ron Townson. The 5th Dimension, 1969 US No. 1 single 'Aquarius'. Died on 8.3.2001.

1945 - Eric Stewart. English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who with the Mindbenders had the 1966 UK No. 2 single 'Groovy Kind Of Love’, as a member of 10cc the 1975 US No. 2 single 'I'm Not In Love' plus 10 other Top 30 hits. Stewart co-owned Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England from 1968 to the early 1980s. He also collaborated with Paul McCartney extensively in the mid-1980s. Born in Droylsden, Lancashire, England.

1947 - George Grantham. Drums, Poco, 1979 US No. 17 single 'Crazy Love'. Born in Cordell, Oklahoma.

1952 - Paul Stanley. Guitarist and singer with American hard rock band Kiss who had 1976 US No. 11 album Rock and Roll Over which spent 26 weeks on the chart and the 1987 UK No. 4 single 'Crazy Crazy Nights'. Kiss have been awarded 24 gold albums to date, the most of any American rock band, selling more than 40 million albums. Stanley established The Starchild character for his Kiss persona. Born in Queens, New York.

1984 - ”Owner Of A Lonely Heart" by Yes goes to No. 1 in America, an uncharacteristic hit and their only Top 10.

1889 - The Columbia Phonograph Company is formed in Washington, DC. The record label eventually morphs into the Columbia Broadcast System, better known today as CBS.

1972 - Don McLean's album 'American Pie' started a seven week run at No. 1 in the US album chart.

1977 - Paul McCartney went to No. 1 on the US album chart with 'Wings Over America', Paul McCartney's sixth US No. 1 after The Beatles.

1988 - The California Raisins' "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" peaks at No. 84 on Billboard's Hot 100.

1991 - John Sebastian, owner and general manager of KLSK FM in Albuquerque, New Mexico, played Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway To Heaven' for twenty-four solid hours to inaugurate a format change to Classic Rock. It plays more than 200 times. Police showed up with guns drawn: once after a listener reported that the DJ had apparently suffered a heart attack, and later because of suspicion that, this being eight days into the Gulf War, the radio station had been taken hostage by terrorists dispatched by Saddam Hussein.

2000 - Santana started a three week run at No. 1 on the US album chart with 'Supernatural'. The album which went on to win eight Grammy awards spent a total of nine weeks at No. 1 during this year.
