1969 - Jethro Tull play their first American show, opening for Blood, Sweat & Tears at New York's Fillmore East.

1941 - Neil Diamond. Singer, songwriter. Had the 1970 US No. 1 single 'Cracklin' Rose' plus over 30 other US & 10 UK Top 40 singles. Wrote 'I'm A Believer', the No. 1 for The Monkees. Many acts from Elvis Presley, Lulu and Deep Purple have all covered his songs. With his 2008 album ‘Home Before Dark’ Diamond became the oldest artist to have a US number one. Born in Brooklyn, New York.
1941 - Ray Stevens. Singer, songwriter who had the 1970 US No. 1 single 'Everything Is Beautiful' and scored the 1974 US No. 1 single 'The Streak’. Born in Clarkdale, Georgia.
1949 - John Belushi. Actor and singer who played Joliet 'Jake' Blues in The Blues Brothers who had the 1990 UK No. 12 single 'Everybody Needs Somebody To Love'. Born in Chicago, IL. Belushi died on 3.5.1982.

1964 - The Beatles scored their first No. 1 best seller in the US when 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' reached the top of the Cash Box Magazine music chart.
1975 - Carpenters went to No. 1 on the US singles chart with their version of 'Please Mr. Postman'. The song is notable as the first Motown song to reach the No. 1 position on the Billboard singles chart late 1961 with the original by The Marvelettes.

1931 - Stig Anderson. Swedish songwriter, producer and ABBA's manager. He co-wrote some of ABBA's biggest hits, such as ‘Waterloo’, ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘S.O.S’, ‘Fernando’, ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’. During the 1960s he was one of Sweden's most prolific songwriters, producing more than 3,000 published titles. Anderson died of a heart attack on 12th Sept 1997.

1965 - 'Downtown' by Petula Clark was at No. 1 on the US singles chart. A young Jimmy Page had played as a session guitarist on the track, giving him his first US No. 1 hit.

1951 - David Briggs. Australian group, Little River Band who scored the 1978 US No. 3 single 'Reminiscing' plus 12 other US Top 40 singles selling more than 30 million records.
1952 - Billy Greer. American musician, singer, songwriter and bass guitarist for Kansas.
1955 - Eddie Van Halen. Dutch guitarist with Van Halen who had the 1984 US No. 1 single 'Jump'. His guitar solo in the track 'Eruption' was voted No. 2 on Guitar World magazine's readers poll of the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos. Born in Amsterdam. Van Halen have sold more than 80 million worldwide, making them one of the best-selling groups of all time. Died 10.6.2020.
1957 - Norman Hassan. Percussionist, trombonist with UB40 who had the 1988 US No. 1 single 'Red Red Wine' and over 30 other Top 40 hit singles. Born in Birmingham, England.

1956 - Elvis Presley's single, 'Heartbreak Hotel' was released by RCA Records, who had just purchased Presley's contract from Sun Records for $35,000. The song sold 300,000 copies in its first week and would eventually sell over a million, becoming Elvis' first Gold record.
1972 - The New Seekers' "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing," originally a Coke commercial, is certified Gold.
1973 - British Glam Rock group Sweet appeared at the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, Scotland and were driven offstage by a barrage of bottles. The incident inspired their song ‘The Ballroom Blitz’ which went on to reach number one in Canada, number two in the UK and the Australian Chart, and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100.

1919 - David Seville. The Chipmunks who had the 1958 US No. 1 single 'The Chipmunk Song'
1944 - Nick Mason. Drums, percussion and tape effects, Pink Floyd. Nick is the only member of the band to play on every album since the band's formation in 1965. He studied architecture at London's Regent Street Polytechnic, where he teamed up with fellow students Roger Waters, Rado 'Bob' Klose and Richard Wright in 1964 to form Pink Floyd's predecessor, Sigma 6. Mason is a keen auto racing enthusiast and has taken part in many racing events such as the French 24 Heures du Mans race in Le Mans. Born in Birmingham, England.
1951 - Brian Downey. Irish drummer and founding member of Thin Lizzy, who had the 1973 UK No. 6 single 'Whisky In The Jar' and hits with 'Jailbreak' and 'The Boys Are Back in Town'. Born in Dublin, Ireland.
1951 - Seth Justman. Keyboards, vocals with American rock band The J Geils Band, who had the 1982 US No. 1 single 'Centerfold' which was taken from their US No. 1 1981 album Freeze Frame. Born in Washington, D.C.

1977 - Pink Floyd's tenth studio album Animals entered the UK charts at No. 2. The sleeve concept was that of Roger Waters, who lived at the time near Clapham Common, and regularly drove past Battersea Power Station. A view of the imposing but disused former power station building was chosen for the cover image, complete with massive inflatable pig suspended between two of the towers.
1978 - The Fleetwood Mac album Rumours went to No. 1 on the UK album chart. The groups eleventh studio album went on to sell over 45 million copies world-wide. The songs 'Go Your Own Way', 'Dreams', 'Don't Stop', and 'You Make Loving Fun' were released as singles.
1984 - Thanks to a ban by the BBC, "Relax," the debut single from Frankie Goes to Hollywood, hits No. 1 in the UK. In America, the No. 1 song is "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" by Yes. Both songs are produced by Trevor Horn, making him the first producer with No. 1’s simultaneously in both territories with different acts.
1985 - Jimmy Buffett opens his first Margaritaville retail store, named for his 1977 hit, in Key West. It sells beach inspired apparel like Caribbean Soul t-shirts and flip-flops.

1973 - After recently changing their name from Wicked Lester, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss made their first appearance as Kiss at the Popcorn Club in Queen's, New York.
1988 - Tiffany was at No. 1 on the UK singles chart with 'I Think We're Alone Now', the singers only UK No. 1 single. The song was a hit for Tommy James & The Shondells in 1967.

1942 - Marty Balin. American singer, songwriter best known as the founder and one of the lead singers of Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship, who had the 1967 US No. 18 single 'White Rabbit'. Balin played with Jefferson Airplane at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and at the Woodstock Festival in 1969. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He died on 9.27.2018 at the age of 76.
1951 - Phil Collins. Drummer, lead singer, songwriter of Genesis who had the 1986 US No. 1 'Invisible Touch', 1992 UK No. 7 single 'I Can't Dance' plus six UK No. 1 albums. As a solo artist had the 1988 UK & US No. 1 single 'A Groovy Kind Of Love' plus six other US No. 1's and four UK No. 1 solo albums. Born in Chiswick, London.
