1969 - Led Zeppelin II was at No. 1 on the US album charts, (the band's first album to reach No. 1 on charts in the UK and the US), it went on to sell over six million copies in the US alone. The album's cover designer David Juniper was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.

1941 - Mike Pinder. Keyboards with English rock band The Moody Blues who had the 1965 US No. 10 single 'Go Now' and the hits singles including 'Go Now', 'Nights in White Satin' and 'Question'. Born in Erdington, Birmingham, England.

1944 - Mick Jones. Guitarist with English-American rock band Foreigner, who scored the 1985 US No. 1 single 'I Want To Know What Love Is'. They are one of the world's best-selling bands of all time with worldwide sales of more than 80 million records. Prior to Foreigner, Jones was in the band Spooky Tooth. Born in Somerton, Somerset, England.

1948 - Larry Byrom. Guitarist from Steppenwolf who had the 1969 US No. 2 hit single 'Born To Be Wild'. Steppenwolf sold over 25 million records worldwide, released eight gold albums and scored 12 Billboard Hot 100 singles. Born in Huntsville, Alabama.

1948 - Martin Birch. British music producer and sound engineer. He became renowned for engineering and producing albums recorded predominantly by British rock bands, including Deep Purple, Rainbow, Fleetwood Mac, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. He died on 8.6.2020 age 71.

1952 - David Knopfler. British singer-songwriter, guitarist, (the younger brother of guitarist Mark Knopfler). He is a co-founder of the rock band Dire Straits, with whom he spent three years. After quitting the band, Knopfler embarked upon a solo career. Born in Glasgow, Scotland.

1973 - Jim Croce scored his second No. 1 US single of the year when 'Time In A Bottle' went to the top of the charts, three months after Croce was killed in a plane crash on 9.20.1973.

English musician, best known as a flautist, singer and composer with English rock band The Moody Blues who had the 1965 US No. 10 single 'Go Now' and the hits singles including 'Go Now', 'Nights in White Satin' and 'Question'. Born in Stourport-on-Severn, England. Thomas died on 1.4.2018.

1947 - Cozy Powell. English rock drummer who worked with The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Gary Moore, Robert Plant, Brian May, Whitesnake, Emerson, Lake & Powell and Black Sabbath. Powell scored the 1973 solo UK No. 3 hit single 'Dance With The Devil'. Born in Gloucestershire, England.

1947 - Jeff Lynne. English songwriter, singer, record producer, who was a member of Idle Race, then The Move who had the 1969 UK No. 1 single 'Blackberry Way'. He co-founded ELO who had the 1979 hit 'Don't Bring Me Down'. And with the Traveling Wilburys had the 1988 UK hit 'Handle With Care'. As a producer Lynne has worked with George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Joe Walsh and others. Born in Shard End, Birmingham, England.

1974 - Having lost guitarist Bob Welch, Fleetwood Mac make an offer to Lindsey Buckingham, but he comes as a package deal with his girlfriend, Stevie Nicks.

1942 - Andy Summers. English guitarist, The Police who scored the 1983 US No. 1 single 'Every Breath You Take', plus four other UK No. 1 singles. Born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, England.
 
1943 - Pete Quaife. English musician, the original bass guitarist for The Kinks from 1963 until 1969. Known for the 1964 US No. 7 single 'You Really Got Me'. Born in Tavistock, Devon, England.

1947 - Burton Cummings. Singer and songwriter from Canadian rock band Guess Who who had the 1970 US No. 1 single 'American Woman'. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

1951 - Tom Hamilton. Bassist with Aerosmith who scored the 1989 UK No.13 single 'Love In An Elevator', and their 1989 album Pump spent 53 weeks on the US charts They had the 1993 US No. 1 album Get A Grip and the 1998 US No. 1 single 'I Don't Want To Miss A Thing'. Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

1951 - Fermin Goytisolo. Singer with American disco and funk group KC and the Sunshine Band who had the 1975 US No. 1 single 'That's The Way, I Like It'. Born in Cuba.

1940 - W2XDG in New York becomes the first licensed FM station and begins broadcasting from the Empire State Building.

1956 - Bill Haley's 'Rock Around the Clock' went to No. 1 on the singles chart for the second time. The single is often cited as the biggest-selling vinyl rock and roll single of all time with sales over 25m.

1956 - Carl Perkins releases "Blue Suede Shoes."

1959 - Johnny Cash played a free concert for the inmates of San Quentin Prison, California. One of the audience members was 19 year-old Merle Haggard, who was in the midst of a 15 year sentence (he served three years) for grand theft auto and armed robbery.

1966 - Simon And Garfunkel started a two week run at No. 1 on the US singles chart with 'The Sounds Of Silence’.

1967 - The Doors made their first live television appearance lip-synching their first single 'Break on Through' on Shebang, KTLA-TV Channel 5 in Los Angeles. The single peaked No. 126 on the US chart mainly due to lack of airplay after censors objected to the drug use implied by the line "she gets high", which is repeated in the middle section of the song.

1968 - The Berkeley, California, swamp-rockers The Golliwogs change their name to Creedence Clearwater Revival.

1990 - The Clearwater, Florida, radio station WKRL becomes the first "All Led Zeppelin" station, kicking off the format flip with 24 straight hours of "Stairway To Heaven." The all-Zep rotation lasts two weeks, after which they become more of a traditional Classic Rock station and they also switch their call letters to WXTB.

January 2nd In Music

1994 - Meat Loaf started a three-week run at No. 1 on the album chart with his sixth studio album Bat Out Of Hell II - Back Into Hell. The LP, which featured the single 'I'd Do Anything for Love', also topped the charts in Australia and has sold more than 14 million copies world-wide.

1999 - Chef went to No. 1 on the UK singles chart with Chocolate Salty Balls (PS I Love You). Chef appeared in the cult TV series South Park, the voice was that of Isaac Hayes (who had a hit with Shaft in 1971).
