On November 18, 2025, aboard a CTA Blue Line train in downtown Chicago (near the LaSalle/Van Buren stop), 50-year-old Lawrence Reed allegedly poured a flammable liquid from a bottle onto a 26-year-old woman and set her on fire. The victim was seated when the attack occurred; surveillance video shows flames engulfing her as the train pulled into the station. Two passengers immediately rushed to help, using their jackets to smother the flames, while others called 911. The woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition with severe burns over much of her body. Chicago police arrested Reed a short time later. He has an extensive criminal history (at least 11 arrests since 2017, with some sources citing up to 49 prior arrests). He has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.
