They are called "rare earth" elements not because they are uncommon. They are called that because they are WIDELY disseminated and very difficult to mine, refine and concentrate into useful form. And doing so is VERY ecologically unfriendly. THAT is why China controls most such elements....because they don't care about trashing the environment.
ReplyDeleteThanks Daniel, I actually thought they were 'rare'. That must be why we haven't heard about this 'discovery' in the western US. Because now that Trump is President, the environmentalists don't have sway over every decision that we make.
