Mexican Food

My wife is from SOCAL and she loves Mexican food, the real stuff. She knows that most Mexican food places, especially places like Taco Bell, have no idea what real Mexican food is. She does a better job of making it herself. When she makes it, I can't eat it unless she makes mine 'special,' without the heat, without the nasty ass cilantro or raw onions, without refried or black beans ... you know ... American Mexican food.

  1. There's fast food crap, which is sometimes good in its own right (say, drunkenly eating a dozen tacos from taco bell at 2 am). That's not real Mexican food.

There's Tex-Mex, which is a style of Mexican food developed in Texas that is sort of Anglicized. Little lower on the heat, lots of cheese, lots of chips and salsa, many combinations of beans, rice and ground meat. Most restaurants in my area (South Texas) serve this type of food. Most people mistake it for real Mexican food, but it ain't. Still good though. Definitely not healthy.

Then there's real Mexican food. The only way you're gonna get it here in the USA is to have someone's Abuela cook it at home. Most restaurants have figured out you won't turn a profit unless you serve Tex-Mex so the real stuff is usually off-menu. It's good too. Not as hot as you'd think, but then again I've been eating hot food since birth.

  2. My wife will order from Taco Bell on very rare occasions but her favorite local Mexican food is actually Tex-Mex from a fairly authentic Mexican restaurant/grocery store here in town, not Mexican but a very close imitation. When we used to travel to go see her family in CA, she would catch up on her Mexican food cravings because they have REAL Mexican food in SOCAL. I can't eat much of the real Mexican food.
