DeSantis delivers electric pro-Trump RNC speech: ‘We cannot let him down.’
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Gov. Ron DeSantis made a primetime speech to the Republican National Convention Tuesday night, voicing support for former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign and drawing a stark contrast between his record compared to President Joe Biden.
Trump was in the audience for DeSantis’ speech, making it the first public gathering where the two were in attendance in quite a period of time. The two did meet privately in Florida this year, however.
“Donald Trump stands in their way and he stands up for America,” DeSantis said. “He’s been sued, he’s been prosecuted, and he nearly lost his life. We cannot let him down, and we cannot let America down.”
The governor continued his attacks on Biden, arguing the incumbent Democrat is merely a “figurehead” for “leftist” ideologies to be imposed on Americans.
“They use the unelected bureaucracy to impose their will on us without our consent,” he said.
“When Donald Trump was president, our border was safer […] our country was respected when Donald Trump was our commander-in-chief,” he said. “As a veteran, I was appalled when 13 of our service members were killed in Afghanistan due to Joe Biden’s dereliction of duty.”
The governor celebrated how under his watch, the Florida GOP has trounced the Florida Democratic Party and took the state off the political map for Democrats.
DeSantis also noted worry about Biden’s age.
“Our enemies do not confine their designs to between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.,” he said. “We need a commander-in-chief who can lead 24 hours a day, and seven days a week.”
Other prime policy positions DeSantis argued for in favor of Trump and against Biden included protecting Second Amendment rights, ending diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in the government, fiscal conservatism, bolstering the military and more.
DeSantis concluded by recanting Trump’s “fight, fight, fight” gesture after being grazed by a bullet in Pennsylvania over the weekend.
DeSantis was swift to call out the attempted assassination on Trump and has been skeptical of the D.C. “bureaucracy’s” ability to investigate its own Secret Service in what he described this week as a massive “security failure” in Pennsylvania.
