The first automobiles crossing the Stock Island Bridge, the original road, which, at the time was named State Road 4A. Florida Keys - January 28, 1928.
While portions of State Road 4A were referenced as “Old Bumpy,” they took a backseat to automobile access for the Long Key Fishing Camp. This photo captures the lone option for driving a vehicle to the island prior to 1935. By 1938, the railroad was gone, a casualty of the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, and the Overseas Highway reopened complete with a connecting bridge to Long Key.
