1957 - Buddy Holly's group The Crickets went to No. 1 on the US singles chart with 'That'll Be The Day.' The title being taken from a phrase used by John Wayne in the film 'The Searchers.'
1967 - The Box Tops started a four week run at No. 1 on the US singles chart with 'The Letter'. The record went on to sell over four million copies and receive two Grammy nominations.
1967 - The Doors release "People Are Strange."
1972 - "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me" by Mac Davis hits No. 1 in America. It holds the top spot for three weeks.
1977 - Steely Dan release their sixth album, Aja. Pronounced "Asia," it's a collection of meticulous and mysterious songs like "Black Cow" and "Deacon Blues."
1980 - Bob Marley plays his final concert: a 20-song set at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh with his group, The Wailers.
1986 - Following a split with their record label and some lineup changes, Boston release Third Stage, their first album since Don't Look Back in 1978. The first single is "Amanda," the group's only No. 1 hit in America. They don't put out another album until 1994.
