Georgia-Pacific facility (Foley - Perry, FL.) says it will treat employees with ‘dignity and respect’ during closure.
TAYLOR COUNTY, Fla. – A spokesperson with the Georgia-Pacific Foley Cellulose Facility in Taylor County said they will treat their affected employees with “dignity and respect” following the facility’s abrupt announcement that it would close.
“Georgia-Pacific shared difficult news during an already difficult time for the Perry community. We would never compound that difficulty by treating our employees with anything but dignity and respect,” public affairs manager of the facility Scott Mixon said.
Following the announcement of the closure, Gov. Ron DeSantis urged the Georgia-Pacific facility to “do what’s right” and called on them to pay severance and insurance that will “bridge the gap and allow these hardworking Floridians to get back on their feet – especially after a hurricane.”
Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson called the announcement of the facility’s decision to close “devastating.”
“While there is never a good time to lose a major employer, particularly in a rural county, this news could not come at a worse time for families devastated by Hurricane Idalia,” Simpson said in a statement.
The company told Florida’s Voice the Georgia-Pacific facility has a “severance plan” for salaried employees and the company “has entered effects bargaining” with the United Steel Workers to discuss hourly employee benefits including severance pay.
Mixon said all employees will be considered active and receive pay and benefits through Nov. 16.
He said during the coming months, Georgia-Pacific will work with affected employees who are interested in transitions to other opportunities within the company, other Koch companies or opportunities outside of the company.
