The pomegranate is native to Israel and is one of the "Seven Species" mentioned by Moses in the description of the Land of Israel included in his valedictory speech to the people of Israel, as they prepare to cross the Jordan and enter the Land:
For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land ... a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and [date] honey.
Deuteronomy, Chapter 8, verses 7-8.
