Henry Flagler's East Coast Railway - Key West Extension - History

These are the twisted remains of Henry Flagler's, Florida East Coast Railroad-Key West Extension after 1935 Labor Day Hurricane. The FEC was financially unable to rebuild the destroyed sections, so the railbed and remaining bridges were sold to the state of Florida for $640,000. Much of the bed was used to the southernmost portion of US 1 known as the Overseas Highway (completed in March of 1938.)
