Christian Nurse Forces Biden to Allow Doctors and Nurses to Opt Out of Abortions.
A Christian nurse has won a massive victory against Joe Biden and his administration’s attempt to force doctors and nurses to participate in abortions that violate their religious views.
Stephanie Carter, a nurse practitioner at the Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Center in Texas filed a lawsuit last year to stop Joe Biden from turning VA hospitals into abortion clinics.
Leading pro-life groups are concerned that a $71 million increase in taxpayer funding to the Office of Women’s Health at the Department of Veterans Affairs will be used illegally to fund abortions. Since 1992, the Department of Veterans Affairs has been statutorily prohibited from using taxpayer dollars for abortion. In September, the Biden administration ignored this longstanding prohibition and issued a new rule that funds abortion for undefined and presumably broad “health” reasons.
Carter filed a lawsuit against the administration, saying she doesn’t want to have to work at a hospital that also kills babies in abortions and could require her to assist in or promote abortions. She initially requested a religious accommodation, but was told by her supervisor that there was no process in place for the VA to consider her request.
Although the Biden administration is proceeding with plans to turn VA clinics into abortion centers, it did revise its plan and will now allow health care workers with religious objections to abortions to opt out of participating in them.
First Liberty Institute, a conservative legal group that filed the lawsuit for Carter, said the religious exemption will apply nationwide and Carter has withdrawn her lawsuit as a result.
“We’re pleased that the VA implemented a nationwide policy to protect the religious liberty rights of all VA employees,” Danielle Runyan, a First Liberty senior counsel, said in a statement.
“Stephanie Carter is living proudly by her faith and should not be forced to choose between her faith and her career. Because of her courage, every VA employee in the nation can now seek a religious accommodation from participating in a procedure they find unconscionable,” Runyan said.
Biden’s move is already a violation of federal law that prohibits the taxpayer-funded VA medical centers from doing abortions but it also violates the Dobbs decision, whereby the Supreme Court gave states the ability to protect babies from abortions.
