DeSantis organizes more than 90 sheriffs in battle against border crisis.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (FLV) – Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a coalition of more than 90 U.S. sheriffs who believe they must step in to stop the border crisis’ effects at the local level because the federal government “has failed in its responsibilities.”
The announcement comes off the heels of an Arizona roundtable where the governor spoke with multiple sheriffs and visited the border.
“Illegal Immigration has not only ravaged communities along the southern border, it has harmed states across the country with the deadly influx of cartel-trafficked fentanyl and higher rates of violent crime,” DeSantis said. “I’m proud to work with this growing group of law enforcement leaders and bring Florida’s dedicated resources and leadership to bear on this national problem.”

Sheriffs joined from states like South Dakota, Michigan, Arkansas, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, New Mexico, Iowa, Arizona, North Dakota, California, Illinois, Colorado and Florida.
In the letter, they noted that encounters at the Southwest Border hit “record numbers” and thanked Florida for recognizing the crisis, dubbed “Biden’s Border Crisis” by DeSantis.
“Under the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida has recognized how the porous border has had far-reaching impacts and has stepped in to support public safety,” they wrote.
“This includes creating a nation-leading human smuggling and drug trafficking strike force in partnership with local sheriffs, lending physical support by deploying members of their national guard, highway patrol and state law enforcement to the border, and enacting a program to voluntarily transport illegal immigrants to so-called sanctuary jurisdictions across the United States,” the sheriffs continued.
Earlier this month, DeSantis said Florida will begin offering training on criminal interdictions and battling drug dealing to other law enforcement agencies nationwide.
“It is unfortunate that the federal government has effectively abandoned border states and forced states like Florida to deal with this burden on their own,” the sheriffs continued. “We can no longer sit by and watch our nation become overrun by gang activity and drug-related violence.”
“While we have been urging the federal government to step up their efforts to secure our border, or at the very least help us deal with the impacts of the border crisis, these pleas have fallen on the deaf ears of an administration that is purposefully unwilling to enforce our nation’s immigration laws,” they wrote.
“The undersigned Sheriffs join together to partner with Governor DeSantis and the state of Florida to preserve the safety and well-being of the citizens we serve.”
They concluded urging other law enforcement agencies across the country to do the same.
Earlier in June at the Arizona roundtable, DeSantis said Florida’s training program will help other areas learn a “model” that has had “tremendous success.”
“We have developed a training program that we believe will help law enforcement across the country mimic some of the success that we’ve had in Florida and also help to train more boots on the ground,” DeSantis said.
