United States Medal of Honor

The Medal of Honor was created during the American Civil War and is the United States Armed Forces highest and most-prestigious military decoration that may be awarded to recognize American soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen, guardians, and coast guardsmen who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor. The recipient must have distinguished themselves at the risk of their own life above and beyond the call of duty in action against an enemy of the United States. Due to the nature of this medal, it is commonly presented posthumously. The medal is normally awarded by the President of the United States in the name of the United States Congress. Because the medal is presented "in the name of Congress", it is also known as the Congressional Medal of Honor.
