Lisa Leonard Dalton was an accomplished dancer by the time she was offered a chance to dance to the ‘updated’ music video “Hang On Sloopy” by Rick Derringer.
There are many rumors about the origin of the name "Sloopy." One popular explanation is that it came from Dorothy Sloop, who was a jazz singer from Steubenville, Ohio. Sloop, who died in 1998 at age 85, performed in the New Orleans area using the name "Sloopy."
Hang On Sloopy had been a hit in 1965 with the McCoys. Rick Derringer had been The McCoys lead singer and he updated the song by speeding it up and adding steel drums and a marimba.
In 1975, music videos were not commonplace. The music video was shot at a back lot in LA,
Lisa was told to dress in a tank top and shorts, no makeup, fingernail polish, or jewelry. Oh yeah, NO BRA. She was given the ’newsboy’ hat at arriving at the film set and told not to reveal her long, blonde hair until told to at a certain point in the song.
Lisa was only paid $200 and was told the video wouldn’t even be shown in the US. It was being made exclusively for European release.
When Derringer sang “Sloopy, let your hair hang down, girl, let it hang down on me,” Lisa removed the hat and let her beautiful blonde hair flow.
Lisa never thought much about that video after the excitement wore off.
After that video, Lisa went to college, got a job, got married, raised two daughters in California, moved to Nevada, and then to Tennessee.
In 2013, during Christmas at her sister Lori’s, while listening to ‘Snoopy’s Christmas by the Royal Guardsmen’ on the radio, Lisa remarked that the tune reminded her of the “Sloopy” song she had danced to so long ago. Lisa’s husband Nick found the YouTube video and that was the first time Lisa saw herself dancing to the Sloopy song.
Several women have tried to claim the title “Sloopy Girl” but pictorial evidence, facial recognition technology and witnesses have all confirmed Lisa Leonard Dalton as the true “Sloopy Girl.”
In 2022, Rick Derringer himself verified on his Facebook page that Lisa was indeed “Sloopy Girl.”
